The NEW Burger Exkelibur model!!!

#1

Post by Zenith »

With my original post regarding the making of the EXK (http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40737) a lot of members bought the knife with a request to disassemble the knife. Since then Trevor has been redesigning the EXK and introduced the new EXK at the Easter Knife Show in Durban.

The knife features a new 2mm thick liner and can be disassembled competently. It comes in a great package with everything you need. torx, special pivot tool, allen wrench a nice pouch and a cloth to clean the knife. Trevor even put extra Teflon washers and pivot set screw (since it is the smallest component) into the but of the special pivot tool (a very nice touch in my opinion).

Here are some pictures when I received the CF model EXK.

Of course the best way to test the new lock is to use it. I used it recently doing some woodwork and buschcraft. We have some really dense wood so it does test a knife manufacturing when carving with the tip of a knife. I really did not think much of the lock initially. So during using the EXK I tried to apply as much force on the tip of the knife in order to see if the lock would ‘jump’ around on the engagement or if there was flex in the knife somewhere. All I can say is **** this knife is build solidly!!! There was no flex and the liner moved over and gave more solid lockup when a LOT of pressure was applied. Functioning more like a framelock and well executed liner lock should function.

I think the small differences that Trevor introduced made huge difference. He told me that this is the highest tolerances he has ever made a knife to and it shows. I love the design of the knife and it is a user. The design has worked for me in everything I have encountered when hunting and EDC.

I have the N690 Bohler steel and it has been a great EDC. I just got off the phone and Trevor is going to have a few steels to choose from for his clients. These include N690 Bohler, Panzer 36, S30V and D2. I am really drawn to getting another for me with the D2 Tool steel with camo handle. Think it will be a great knife!

Trevor also introduced a new website for those who are interested. He is doing some videos to show disassembly of the knife etc and the site also has a Trevor’s blog. Trevor and his brother also have a stall at the Blade show in Atlanta this year for those that might be interested.

His website is: http://www.burgerknives.co.za

The name Burger does catch one doesnt it? :p :D

Initially I did not know what the function of the grub screw etc was, but after a while I think I have figured it out. When you want to change the tension of the knife you first loosen the grub screw, loosen or tighten the pivot to the desired tension and tighten the grub screw.

Now in the future all you need to do when taking the knife apart is to loosen the pivot screw and take apart. If you do not change the tension of the grub screw and you assemble the knife all you do is tighten the pivot till it locks and your back to the tension you prefer. A bit complex initially, but it is growing on me.

Nice update to the original design. I've been EDC'ing that for the last months, rotated with a :spyder: CF Walker.

2mm for the liner sounds a bit much ?!

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you deploy the knife?

I don't see a thumb stud, nail nick, round hole, or deployment button!

:) Can be but this thing snaps open and has a good positive feel to it. Trevor wanted a thick liner in order to be able to build the knife on and I think he succeeded.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the knife!

Here is a video made by another member with the old model. Same methods can be applied to the new one.

Here is what I have been doing with the EXK. HAs held up to everything. The Pivot pin only loosened up when I batoned with it in the video. Lockup is still solid and no blade play.

It's interesting how none of the related videos from youtube are about knives. :D

I had imagined a knife would have a more difficult time going through a tire.

Jip. The related videos made me scratch my head the first time I posted. Some really od ones.

I am sure other knives with the same grind would have also gone through the tire that easy, the tire is not one of those with wire reinforcement or so. Just a plain good old tire that needed some tender loving care...... :D :p

That looks a superb hand-made knife - I'd love one - especially the CF version - when I can afford it  :D

Any idea what the pivot screw head type is called? I've seen that type rarely on other knives but always wondered where I'd get a screwdriver to fit it ... but perhaps Trevor makes his own screwdriver bits?
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

I really do not know what the screws are called. Most knife makers in SA buy from a company called KMTS. You can search for them they have a website and under their pivots for folding knives you can see they have different sizes. They also have some of those special pivot screwdrivers if you would like to buy separately, but if you buy the knife with the kit you recieve everything (cleaning cloth, T6 Driver, Pivot spanner, Allen key) (http://www.burgerknives.co.za/index.php ... &Itemid=31)
