Benchmade Griptilian question

#1

Post by ClockWork »

Yes... I know... this is Blasphemy

but,
I just got my Brand New Benchmade 550HG Griptilian.

And it has developed a rattle when the knife is closed. I can't find my Torx wrench to try to see what it is. And, it stops rattling when the knife is open

Has anyone else had this problem??

Thanks so much,

Did you try asking over at Bladeforums or on the Benchmade forums? Seems like I read somewhere (Bladeforums I think) that the rattling is somewhat common with the Axis lock, especially the Griptillian for some reason, and that it doesn't affect lock-up or use. However, if the blade is not locking-up when opened, there may be a problem.

The stop pin is just a little loose(not a problem). If it bothers you as it did me : A tiny drop of super glue GEL where the stop pin fits into the liner(both sides) Works !

NOTE To prove it's the pin, put tape on the stop and shake it around.
If it still rattles, after the glue, you may have a broken "O" spring, then go to the factory.

That rattle you hear is the Death-Rattle of the Griptilian as your pocket strangles it to death for taking up space that rightfully belongs to a Spyderco! :p

ClockWork,

I have this exact same model Griptilian and it doesn't make a sound.

Call Benchmade or take it back where you bought it for an exchange.

I've got about a dozen variations of the Griptilian, and about 30% have this stop pin rattle when new. Most of them stopped doing it after being carried awhile, without me having to do anything.

Thanks for the help guys,

I took the Griptilian apart, and It is infact the stop pin.

I'm always overly sensitive when I get a new knife. Every little wibble-wobble, and movement, and noise bothers me....  But, I soon get over it.

I just ordered some Militec-1 lube. So I will crank down the pivot screw, and throw some lube on it and see if that helps. If the issue persist I might send it back to BM.
BM's warrenty says you need proof of purchase. And from ebay, its a little harder. That and thats kinda annoying, compared to Spydies warrenty.

Maybe it will go away on its own, Or maybe it will stop bothering me??? Who knows.

Thanks for all the input and for supporting my infidelity.

I just went through mine and gave them all a good shaking, and of the few that did it when new, only 1 still has a touch of it, and it's the one I have carried the least.

Something about flicking them open seems to "set" the stop pin in place after awhile. The worst was my Ritter Mini-RSK and it has completely quit.

A rattly stop pin sleeve is not a fault or a problem. The sleeve is free to rotate to spread the wear over the whole circumference and the rattle should stop of its own accord in time.
If it bothers you, you can glue or loctite it in place.

It is worth buying some blue loctite to set the pivot tension at exactly the point that gives the opening and closing characteristics that you desire.

I have my Axis lock knives set so that the blade will not quite rotate by gravity alone when the studs are held back, but so that the knife can be flicked open if I need to.

No. Your wrong.

My 60 dollar knife should not have a rattle in it.
