I would try the Tales of the Otori series by Lian Hearn. It's set in feudal Japan. The series starts with "Across the Nightingale Floor". I've read the first three (listened, actually) and they were great. Just found out there is a fourth and final book. Can't wait to finish out the series.

A second on the "Tales of the Otori" series. Although I hated seeing it end like that, I can accept the zen.

@bpfsu & chinook: I checked out the series you recommended, and it does look very interesting. I'm gonna have to read it myself.

I second the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Can't believe I forgot about him. Excellent books.
