Who's your favorite guitarist?

#1

Post by AllenETreat »

Mine : Jimi Hendrix.

I like his Hey baby ( New Rising Sun )

( is the microphone on? )

Hey baby, where do you come-a from?
Well, she looked at me and smiled, and looked into space
and said : " I come from the land of the New Rising Sun."
Then I said : "Hey baby, where you tryin' to go to?"
And she said : "I come to spread around peace of mind, and
a whole lotta love to you and you!"

Then I said : "May I come along?"
"Would you love to come along?" she asked me

Yeah, take me along right now.

What say the augurers?

AET :D
All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night, in the dusty recesses of their minds, awake in the day to find that it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes to make it reality.

For me it would be Hendrix and Tom Morello,
for obvious reasons. Though who doesnt like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Claptin, and the likes. I just really love Tom and Jimi's work.

Very tough question. I like all of the greats like Hendrix, Satriani, Eric Johnson, Kottke, and Santana but I think the best new talent may be John Mayer. I happenend to see him live in Boston (as a warmup for Bonnie Raitt) in a really cool, small, venue. If you can survive all the sreaming teenagers then I say he's worth a look and a listen live, if not, then check out an album (any of 'em) as they're all good.

An Odd Choice...

Dear Friends,

I have spent the last twenty years of my life as anon-again-off-again semi-professional musician and have enjoyed working with a lot of great local guitarists. I have, through them, been exposed to some of the finest guitar recordings ever.

I have enjoyed Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Reb Beach, Trevor Rabin, Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Eric Johnson and George Lynch, among countless others.

(Strangely enough, one of my all-time favorites is Walter Becker of Steely Dan.)

However, my all-time favorite guitarist would have to be... (drum roll, please)

Steve Lukather of Toto.

Always supporting the rhythm section, solos that will truly inspire and move you, and never a note too many or too few.

if you would asked me 5 years ago i would have probably said Robert Smith. these days i'd probably have to go with Kozaburo Narita aka Sonic Dragolgo. he's still young and hasn't put out huge amounts of music but his guitar work is among the most unique i have heard. he's generally considered "hardcore techno" but his guitar playing is always the centerpiece of his songs.

When I'm thinking best guitaring, I always think of acoustic pieces. Examples:

Clapton -- Classical Gas
Zeppelin (Robert Plant?) -- Swan Song
Black Sabbath -- Laguna Sunrise

Of course I respect the greats: Jimi, Van Halen, Slash, Santana, etc. But sometimes I think they hide behind the screamin distorsion.

speaking of acoustic, despite being in a "joke" band Kyle Gas of Tenacious D is a pretty **** good musician.

Allen, Silly post!!!

Should be favorite 5 or 10 or 20... guitarist. Can't pick one. Some very good picks so far but...

I see no mention of Leo Kottkee. Everyone should check out Leo's abilities on the 12 string.

No one has mentioned Jeff Beck? Jeff Beck is amazing. I saw JB promoting a new album (Letterman or Leno) and can not fathom how he could produce the sounds he did. The sounds from his guitar were physical texures perceived in the audible frequency range. Unbelievable skill even with a close up on his hands I was stunned. No tricks or editing needed.

Adrian Legg for the sheer virtuousity on acoutic guitar.

Many many more.
