Asp baton carry and training question

#1

Post by Monkeysbane »

I am looking into getting a 21" asp airweight baton, but I am not sure how to carry it concealed or how comfortable/easy it would be. I think I read in a Tactical Knives article that Mr. Janich said he used the "felony carry" for his. Do you use a sheath, if so, how does it work and where can I get one?

Also, I have been looking at a couple of videos specifically related to the use of an asp by Kelly Worden and Kelly McCann. Does anyone have any experience with either of these videos? I have McCann's combatives series in which there is a stickfighting segment, is that basically what he teaches in his baton video?

Hey Mark,

Welcome to the MBC Forum. You could go to 2004 Martial Blade Camp in Sept. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I’ve carried my ASP IWB (in waist band) behind my kidney. ASP uses to (and may still due) make a shoulder hostler. It was a good idea, but needed a few design modifications. Most Philippine arts (Kali) will give you a good base for using an ASP. I haven’t seen Worden or McCann vids so I can speak about those. If there is some stick work on a tape you have, train it. It’ll at least give you a start.

The “Felony” carry that Mike Janich refers to, is strong side, inside waistband, along the “groin line”. This is a very secure position and the portion of the handle that protrudes can easily be covered by blousing your shirt slightly. This style of carry is comfortable enough to wear all day, even when seated at a computer terminal or in your car.

Both Kelly McCann’s and Kelly Worden’s collapsible/tactical baton videos are available from Paladin Press. Both tapes are excellent, pick McCann for a hard-core combatives approach and pick Worden for a hard-core FMA approach.

Mr. Skin is right, the 2004 MBC camp will be a great place to train with your ASP, and knife and…..

Best,

Mike

Ive been after either a 21" or 24" Casco expandable baton for a while now, Ive been thinking if one could find a baton that closes to a good enough size it could double up as a yawara stick for fist load strikes.
I would probably remove the foam handle coating and replace it with something grippy and durable under such uses.

ASP makes their batons with a rubber grip also. They are called the Federal(steel) and Duratec(aluminum alloy) models.

Check out the Winchester-Wilmoth batons. They are like a heavy-duty version of the ASP. Much heavier too...

You just replied to a three years old thread :D ...
And these WW batons are not exactly comfy to carry, due to their weight.
...but no, no, you know it all, it's harmless little bunny...

Hah. This is pretty old. lol.
I got a 20" I think it is, in my truck between the seats. Its too heavy to carry IMO. Though, Im almost certain that Im breaking some kind of law having it in my truck. Ah well. My inspections been out six months. I guess they just dont care about a white pickup with a pudgy white guy in it. :)

:spyder: Kelly Wordens tape is awesome. It's around 4 hours long with all the drills you'll ever need. A great product from the first American to be given master creds by Remey Presas. :spyder:

I am EDCing a 16 airweight ASP. I am not using any kind of holster, but carry it in the trousers back pocket most of the time - is comfy enough if you dont have to sit for a long time /when I am at the office, its locked in my table/ and gives you a tactical advantage that the attacker wont see you taking it out.
With 21 airweight I can imagine the same carry without any issues, only some loose clothing at the upper side to cover the end of the baton sticking out of the pocket.
IWB is optional, but feels not that comfortable for me.

As for the training, I went through the basic ASP course by Mr. Stan Gazdik, a former chief instructor for CBQ at 2REP unit of legion etrangere /french foreign legion/. It was definetely worth every penny and if you are from middle Europe I deeply recommend this superior instructor with many real combat skills.

They were looking like expandable baseball bats to me, not something I would like to carry daily..
