Here are a couple films I haven't seen yet, but am interested in:

Incantation (Taiwan, 2022), trailer

I've heard some really good things about this movie. I can only assume that the trailer probably doesn't do the movie justice. Taiwanese movies have changed a lot since the time I lived there. I'm interested to see if the Taiwanese can make horror films on par with Japanese and South Korean horror films.

Lake Mungo (Australia, 2010), trailer

This movie is filmed in the mockumentary style, but I've also heard good things about this one. Mockumentary-style horror can be good, if they're done right.

Just watched "Fall" with my wife last night. (Produced by the same people who made the movie "47 Meters Down"). "Fall" was terrifying. I literally had sweaty palms the entire time we watched it.

I love horror movies and Halloween is my favorite holiday! Im an 80s kid so any of the iconic slashers from that era are right up my alley. I also love the golden age of horror cinema from the 30s and 40s.

I used to watch horror films allot but my girlfriend can not handle watching them.
But The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal will always be my favorites.
The way Anthony Hopkins brings Dr Lecter to life always give me goosebumps.
For me they are true Masterpieces.

The Silence of the Lambs is an outstanding horror movie. Great acting and tempo. Wasn’t keen on the Hannibal sequel but the Hannibal TV series is excellent. It was 3 seasons and season 2 is off the charts good. The weakest is the first half of the third and final season but the second half is again great.

Came across a couple of apparently good horror movies on HBO & Amazon. I haven’t watched them yet. Any thoughts?

IMO, Hereditary is one of the best horror movies of the past several years. It's more of a slow-burn horror, which I prefer for supernatural horror.

Abominable (2006)

Full movie. Unfortunately, this is only the link to watch it on YouTube.

I'd almost forgotten about this. I saw it a long time ago on the Sci-Fi channel. I thought it would suck, but I ended up really liking it. Some might think it's cheesy, but to me it's a good, old-fashioned monster movie, with no CGI effects; very rare for a post-2K horror movie. For me, a movie only needs to be entertaining, not necessarily high-brow.

I don't know anything about production costs, but IMO, CGI, especially if overused, is lazy filmmaking. And especially nowadays. It takes much more work to rely on plot, character development, and atmosphere.

For example, the CGI way back in Terminator 2, the original Jurassic Park, etc., were great. Compared to today, where live-action movies have so much CGI they're like watching cartoons. Not that I mind good cartoons, but I prefer cartoons with at least SOME if not mostly hand-drawn animation. And in current horror movies, the CGI'd monsters and ghosts are WAY overexaggerated in their mannerisms.

Hereditary has CGI, but nowhere near as overdone or bad as most current horror films.

Jim,

Yes, way too much CGI these days.

That and all of the remakes of a lot of older movies now.

They are remaking all of Stephen King's movies, all of them. :eye-roll

Some have already been out for a little while like the IT and The Stand remakes...

Not sure why they are remaking movies that don't need to be remade as the originals are already very good.

The Salem's Lot remake is supposed to be out this year.

I won't be watching the Salem's Lot remake. It'll just be more violent, more bloody, and the vampires will be GCI and way overexaggerated.

The Carrie remake from several years ago was closer to the novel than the 1976 Carrie movie was, but it was vastly inferior to the 1976 version, which had memorable actors/actresses and characters. The remake was of course more violent, but wasn't memorable at all.

I saw the first IT remake (didn't watch part 2). The original IT for TV wasn't good. Part 1 of the remake was fair, but it showed the clown monster WAY TOO MUCH.

None of the others need to be remade. Though I'm sure that Stephen King isn't complaining. He'll be getting megabucks from the remakes, in addition to all he's gotten and continues to get. Which is great for him. I'll simply choose not to watch them.

Like the Pet Sematary remake. :rofl

It was an exact copy word for word of the original except with different actors. :eye-roll

The original Texas chainsaw massacre (most of the sequels are garbage, the remake was ok) I think is a masterpiece of a horror movie. Simple, not a lot of story (by design) but the concept feels like the most terrifying thing that could happen to a group of people. The execution of it is so twisted, realistic, and gritty. from the set design, the industrial score, the camera work. really gives off a snuff film type of vibe.

I agree. The original definitely IS a masterpiece. Convincing and disturbing (even darkly funny) characters, and *very little actual gore.* The gore is mostly implied, rather than shown. Yet you feel like you're witnessing the horror. IMO, that takes a far higher level of filmmaking skill than shooting "torture porn". The low budget and unrefined quality only adds to its believability.

RIP Lance Kerwin

He played Mark Petrie in the 1979 mini-series Salem's Lot.

I never watched James at 15, but I remember him guest-starring in other TV shows in the '70s.

Carnival of Souls (1962)

Full movie.

This was an extremely low-budget independent film. I first saw it on TV when I was around 9. I found it creepy back then, and still feel it's an eerie film, perhaps even helped by its low budget. This movie has no modern 'jump scares,' and no roaring CGI monsters rushing at the camera. It was all about mood and atmosphere which, IMHO, are far more effective at the creep factor than all the overdone modern effects.

I don't like really scary movies. I've seen enough real horror. However, chills and thrills are okay.

On another note, they are talking remakes of Forbidden Planet and Them. I would love to see updates, but those idiots they have in Hollywood would ruin these movies forever.

The types or horror movies I don't like are, for example, the kinds Eli Roth makes (Hostel, Cabin Fever, etc.). After I saw those two, I refuse to watch his stuff anymore. Same for movies like The Ruins. I don't like so-called 'torture porn' or gross disease horror films. I don't see how those can even be entertaining, but to each his own.

As for movie remakes, the only remake I liked better than the original is John Carpenter's The Thing (which is actually my favorite sci-fi/horror film). And that was made over 40 years ago. After that one, Hollyweird simply cannot do good remakes. They only remake horror movies to make them louder/more over-the-top, more graphically violent, and to add more cheap CGi. If Hollyweird ever does remake Them or Forbidden Planet, the originals won't be ruined for me, because I won't watch the remakes.

I've seen remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original of which was atmospheric, and actually showed surprisingly little to no gore), The Fog, Carrie, The Evil Dead, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Haunting, Dawn of the Dead, Pulse (a Japanese horror film), and probably a lot more. All of the remakes sucked, IMO.

I know a lot of (especially younger) people seem to prefer the Dawn of the Dead remake; I did not. It has running zombies. So what? The movie itself was vastly inferior to the original, which was character-driven. The characters in the original were memorable. I can't even recall any of the characters from the remake. Characters, not monsters or gore, are what drive storylines and make an audience captivated and invested in the outcome. The remakes (with the exception of John Carpenter's The Thing) are never character-driven.

I am DONE with remakes.

*Edit to add:

I did like Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) WAY better than the 1931 Dracula. But it's not a true remake of the 1931 Bela Lugosi film; it is based on the original novel.
