Spyders + swimming/boating? = loss?

Post by mjmcdowell »

Has anybody dared to use/carry any of there prized spyders while in the active pursuit of water sports? And I do stress the word avtive, not just a quick dip in the family pool where loss would only require one of the kids going deep to fetch it . I have some thoughts about this having owned a sailboat and sailing a large fresh water lake for over 20 years but I wish to hear yours ,if you could add some input I would appreciate it.thanks, stay safe, mjmcdowell

We have a sailboat and sail the blue water off Souther California. I usually carry one of the Spydies clipped to my right front Levi's pocket. Probably not one of the specially collectables or unreplacables. Been lucky so far. Hope it keeps.

One word: LANYARD. Not some pretty key-fob little tassle, but a real, honest-to-goodness lanyard fastening it to your body in case it gets dropped in a wet/slippery/pitching environment.

I have never had a Spydie in a similar situation, but used to carry a Swiss Army Knife on a long lanyard around my neck when wadefishing...

run a loop of paracord through your lanyard hole and secure through your belt loop, about 18", no worry about losing your spydie.

and, carry a less expensive FRN to be on the safe side.

Hey guys. My dad sails, and to motivate me to want to join him (I know, I shouldn't have to, but I'm more into speed) I bought a NIB Harpy (Boye dent, but ats-55) for $40 off ebay. For that price I can afford to carry the ultimate boating knife without worries, clipped iwb to shorts or windbreakers. No problems yet. Too bad they aren't G10 anymore though, I'd worry less about those wet handles slipping. Anyway, just pick up a "replaceable" Merlin and don't worry too much. Hope that helps, Jim

Aloha! Lanyard. they work. I carried a Rescue clipped to the neck line of my wetsuit while night diving many times, and that called for going through some breaks. I still have the Rescue, but my brother once dropped it while we were night diving in about 20-30ft. of water. it was then I put on a lanyard, as it took a lot of time and energy trying to find it.(It's the older Rescue with drain "hole" in scales and integrated clip, so it held meaning to me. 'specially once when I was lying on this ledge while night diving and this big Moray eel was grabbing my "catch bag"...boy, did I cut the wrist line in a flash!

God will put you over...if you let Him!

I spent a week on a houseboat with my Delica. I used paracord to build a short lanyard. I could un-clip the lanyard from my belt-loop, and snug it around my wrist, before drawing the knife. It prevented loss while carrying, or using.

I use a stretchy neck loop like I use to display my id badge at work, but for the knife, I attach it to my belt loop instead of around my neck.

I use a telephone cord coil type lanyard that I adapted from one sold for jet ski keys.It is attached to my flotation vest when kayaking and works very well.It stays out of the way when not in use and stretches out easily when I need my knife.

40 cents of paracord could save you 70 bucks if you attach a lanyard to that Spydie. I like to keep noose style (Reeve) lanyards on all my Spyderco's with a thong hole just in the occasion that I might lose one.

I once lost a Spydie on a boat...but I love the outcom of it!!
We were preparying the boat (21 foot Sjaegt !! Takes a couple of Vikings to sail these old boats!!) for a race to be held the next day. the wind was about 11-14 m/sek, and we were happy it wasn´t the day of the race!! (these boats has no keels, so you have to make them live in the wind!!) my daughter, Emma-Cecile, was in the front of the boat when her arm got caught under the line fixed to the pier. The boat was pulled away from the pier by the wind, so her arm got pinched "pretty" hard. I tried to pull the boat closer to the pier, but the vind was to hard. I then pulled out my fully serrated Merlin and cut the hemp rope (14mm) in one cut! Emma got away with a pinched arm, but if I hadn´t been there with my Spydie, she would have had a fleshwound to show off for the rest of her life. Her arm was black and blu for a week and this was only after a couple of sek.´s... Well the Merlin got lost in the water when the father grapped his little girl and pulled her into his arms!! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Guess it slided into Neptuns hands.....
If the laws in this little kingdom wasn´t soooo stupid, I would have every man in my Sjaegt equiped with a SE spydie!!!
