Just got a little "Horn"ier

#1

Post by The Deacon »

Added another Spyderco Jess Horn to my collection. Sniped a sweet little stainless "baby Horn" on eBay Tueday nite, found it waiting in my mailbox when I got home from work today. Which brings me to a question. There's the C27 in jigged bone, the C34 in black micarta, the C38 in black FRN, the AG Russell "baby" in white linen micarta with a full flat ground blade, and the AG Russell "baby" in stainless with a hollow ground blade. So the question is, are there any other variants?

The white micarta came in two sizes, the "baby" and the "3/4" size I believe it was called.

Thanks for the replies, and the pictures recoil and chinook. Beginning to look like my quest for Horns won't be over for a while. That's three so far that I hadn't seen before; the black micarta "baby" and the burgundy and white flat ground versions of the 34.

Have you guys noticed that you can move the clip slightly from side to side on the micarta horns? I thought I had a damaged knife the first time I noticed it, but I think it's the way the holes are positioned that allows the movement as most of my micarta horns do the same thing.

Stevie, just checked out both my micarta Horns and my JD Smith, no side play in any of the clips. Do know what you're talking about as the clip on my G10 Black Hawk does that. IMHO, based on observations made when removing clips from a few Spydercos, the screws used with a given clip vary from model to model and sometimes even from batch to batch. Some of them are really too small in diameter for the size of the holes in the clip. While this works ok on the stainless handles, it becomes an issue on the plastics where you can't torque the screws down hard.

If I were going to carry my Black Hawk, I would consider removing the middle screw, clamping the clip gently to the handle, backing the two outer screws out about half way, putting a little five minute epoxy in the clip holes around the two outer screws with a toothpick, and retighting them. Then, about an hour later, remove the clamp put the middle screw in about half way, and do the same thing to it. This would create expoxy "sleeves" between the clip and the screws which, in theory, should stop the wobble without requiring excess torque on the screws.

Paul,

That sounds like a good way to make it right, and I agree with you that it is likely the screw diameter. I took the clip off the black Micarta knife and didn't see anything obvious. I bought a white NIB AG Russell Horn awhile back and was disappointed to find that it had the same play on the clip. It is subtle, and doesn't take away from the knife, but ....

I've got a pair of those SS baby Horns. Far as I know, they're an AGR exclusive. Did yours come in a plain white box?

DR, my stainless one did not come with a box, so no clue as to what the box may have looked like or been marked. Didn't get one with the white micarta either. On the other hand, my C34, and one of my C38's came in plain white boxes (just the model name and number, a barcode and a date), my other C38 in the dark box with the spider web.

On a totally different note, my fondness for the Spyderco/Horn knives also led me a while back to acquire a Beretta/Horn collaboration model. I was slightly disappointed in it at first. While the quaility is top notch, on a par with the C27, the knife was considerably larger than I anticipated. It's about the size of a JD Smith or Buck 110 and somewhere between them weight-wise. This is a bit larger that I really like a pocket knife. My disappointment was tempered somewhat when I saw this Jess Horn original on eBay the other day:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 2207181996

That one is way to rich for my blood, and, frankly, if I were considering spending that kind of money for an knife with engraving on it, I think I'd prefer something a bit more traditional. But I now finally see the Beretta for what it is, a very faithful rendition of a particular Horn design. Aside from mine having jigged bone scales an plain bolsters, the two appear identical.

Can you imagine trying to explain a $2500 paypal ding if you somehow decided to pull the trigger on this knife.

Imagine this dialog with the wife: "Dear ..., what is this charge on your credit card bill?" "Well sweetheart, I got 1 (ONE) knife for my $2500 from Ebay." Cripes ... I don't even want to think about the fireworks that would flair up around here... (grinning).

How much do think he should reasonable expect to get for the blade? Surely his asking prices is high...??

Stevie, being single I wouldn't have that particular scenario to worry about, athough I'd probably shoot myself if I spent that kind of bucks and then did not like the knife.

As far as the BIN price goes, from everything I've read, Jess Horn is one of the select handful of makers who's work can command that kind of numbers. Whether that particular specimen is worth $2500 or not, is beyond my limited knowledge. But we may find out in a few days if at least one person thinks it's a good deal.

I must say I've had some strange shocks both ways when watching auctions to gauge the "value" of something. Items that I thought the starting bid was aready overpriced have brought twice and three times it, and others have sold for a song. On the other hand, I buy for personal enjoyment, with no though of future resale value, so my ideas of value tend to reflect only what a given knife is worth to me, rather than "fair market value" or "potential future value".

Attached a picture of the Beretta/Horn, along with one each of the Sypderco/Horns so you can see the relative sizes. Its a scan, and does none of the knives, least of all the Beretta, justice, but it does give an much more accurate size comparison than any of my photos would. I've yet to master the art of eliminating perspective with a digital camera.

edited to add: a little searching around with Google turned up this pair at AZ Custom Knives, since these are unadorned, and more the size of a C34, and are $1700 each, I'd venture that the asking price on the larger engraved one is not unrealistic.

Paul,

What do you make of this knife? I took it for a Spyderco Horn when I bought it, but it doesn't have the Horn label on it. The handle appears to be grooved micarta with a grain design running through it.
