Any assisted opening or semi-auto Spydercos?

#1

Post by SilverDragon »

I was wondering if Spyderco has any assisted opening knives in the works.

Given that the development of an assisted opening Spyderco would take some effort, time, and money, it's understandable that a Spyderco with this feature would cost considerably more than your standard manual Spydie.

But imagine the possibilities! Who wouldn't like an assisted opening Military or Police? Hmmm...

What say everyone else? What are your opinions?

I seem to be as quick with my Spyderco's, as some of my friends with there "assisted opening folders". I still think the quickest opening folder is the Emerson Commander. I use to have one, but traded it for a Spydie.

Well, there is no doubt that the Sypderhle is a great innovation in the one-handed opening knife world.

But don't you sometimes find that some Spydercos would benefit from assisted opening? I've bought a couple of Spydercos in the past that were incredibly tight and hard to open, even after lubing up the joints with Miltec-TufGlide and knifestrubating it for a week in front of the TV.

Maybe Sal or Eric can make a new opening assisted knife, the size of the Ladybug or Jester and call it the "Flea" :-) Just a thought.

I have a Kershaw Chive and I like it. I was wondering how cool would it look with a hump and a round hole in the blade.
Yet, I don't think an assisted opening would be a real progress. The hole gives you full control of the deployment IMHO.

Be careful what you ask for SilverDragon. Our insane Senator Feinstien tried to get spyderco knives classed as switchblades so that they would be illegal here. The knife lobby was able to beat her, but it was touch and go. If they were assist open that would have inflamed the lunatics even more.

Right now, it is up to the local County DA's to determine if the kersaw assist open knive with a 2+ inch blade can be sold.

No thank you! Assisted Opening knives are illegal here in Michigan. As Carlos stated: The hole is all we need.

The Spyderhole allows you to control how fast the blade opens. You don't get that kind of control with a assisted opener. I have a few Kershaws in my collection, but they are there because the mechanism is fun to play with. I carry Spydercos because they work well. One added bonus is that I don't have to worry about unexpected openings in my pocket.

I would have to agree that assisted opening folders are pretty cool.....BUT with the SpyderHole, that's all the assistance that I need.

I don't think Spyderco needs an assisted or auto knife. If you can flick your wrist correctly, you can extract the blade as fast as an auto. In fact, I really don't understand why auto knives are illegal. They really aren't any more dangerous than a regular folder or fixed blade knife.

They are illegal because those who make the laws are non knife persons and don't make the difference between the knife and the person who handles it.
If a knife is good, of course it will be preffered by most people, and some of them may be bad guys. It's just statistics.
It was a time when an auto was a revolutionary concept, then it was the butterfly era, then the stud opening system, now it seems it's the hole openers time.
