Newbie needs opinions on next purchase.

#1

Post by JHanna »

Hello all. As stated, I'm new to the forum and relatively new to the world of knives having made my first purchase in June of this year. Spyderco has quickly become favorite manufacturer for many reasons, not the least of which is the incredible variety of their designs. I only have 4 Spydies so far - SS Delica ce, Dodo pe, Calypso Jr Ltwt se and Navigator pe. I'm looking to add a fifth and I wonder what you might consider to be a "must have" to help round out a small but growing collection.

Well, I would suggestion just one but as you can tell it just doesn't stop there now does it. Let me say, 'Welcome!' first and then tell you that you should look for a Native variation that appeals to you and then go for a smaller spydie like a cricket. I know that after you handle at least those two and compare them to the ones you stated that you have you will even be more eager to add other models to your collection. Good Luck!

Get a Starmate! I recently got one back after I sold my first one. I'm never gonna sell this one. It's such a beautifull and functional knife! Very well made liner lock. Beautifull grind on the spine. Nicely shaped G-10 scales....

Well, since you already have stainless, G-10, FRN and aluminum handled Spydies, my suggestion would be to go for either a jigged bone, titanium or micarta handled one. The Kiwi in jigged bone is a sweet little gent's knife with excellent workmanship that gives the look and feel of an traditional pocketknife but with modern steel, a rock solid lockback, and one hand opening. The ATR is another very well crafted knife, albeit a tad on the expensive side. Not my cup of tea personallly, but those who have them rave about them. Micarta is a bit harder, I don't believe there are any in the current lineup, but one I would mention as worth considering would be the JD Smith. This is probably one of the most under-rated Spydercos out there and can often be found on eBay and elsewhere at bargain basement prices. I always liked the size and overall look of a Buck 110, but was turned off by the weight, thickness, and difficult opening. The JD Smith is far lighter, much thinner and opens very easily.

Hello JRH and welcome aboard.
Unfortunatelly I have bad news for you, my friend. You've been biten by the Spyderco virus and you'll need proffesional assistance. As soon as he'll arrive, our young friend VampyreWolf will handle you the forms for SATC (Spyderco Addiction Treatment Centre), but don't expect much. The virus is a polymorphic one and at least once a year pops out with new models, which are harder and harder to resist.
For the beginning, I'd suggest you to get the C29 Cricket and the C36 Military. The C07 Police is also a must have, so act now.

I agree with the Deacon ... Buy the JD Smith and you will fall in love with Spydies ... It was one of my first... The SFO recently was selling them for $49 bucks and they go for about that on Ebay ... For work ... it's really hard to beat a lightweight FRN Dragonfly ... The other bargain out there if you get it cheap is the BRK 1st Gen. Native. You'll have to sharpen it, smooth the clip on a grinder a bit and use a little oil, but ..... at the moment .. that's what's in my pocket.

The next has gotta be a Military PE or a leaf blade Lil Temperance.

Why? you have the small to medium bases well covered.. now for a heavy duty folder... And I can't think of better than the two listed above

Oh, and BTW - Welcome to the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> forum <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
