Pimp my Paysan

#1

Post by Fireman »

To be honest, the Paysan will not be a utility knife and more of a functional art piece and I was thinking about doing some mods to it. What do you think about a lightning anodize? Already got the Lynch deep carry clip. Also considering giving a sort or forward choil to it.

Removing some forward handle would allow a good choke up point.

Possibly a FFG. I saw one and it was perfectly executed

Kudos to those that have the nerve to modify their 500+ dollar knives.

If it’s meant to be a functional art piece and not a utility knife, I wouldn’t butcher it by adding an unnecessary forward choil.

Some sort of anodizing could look cool though.

Maybe just lighting anodize just the flats on both sides? Lock bar access cut out?

I would have “Knife Modders” do it. They are great

imho, lightning anodization isn't attractive, but it's your knife, do what you want. Keep in mjnd that it will probably hurt the resale value.

If you're ready to grind on it, why not use it?

Excellent point…
I wanted to make some ergonomic changes and then I was wondering if I should do more to it. I could beat the **** out of it before a spa job but I usually use other knives for utility. The Paysan is more like wearing a Rolex, it tells time but you really want it to tell something more about yourself. A FFG and forward choil area would actually add utility for me.

If you are going to mod a knife, might as well go full mod

This entire thread is almost physically painful for me. My Paysan is destined to be a barely-touched safe queen.

I just want to say I like your style Fireman. Safe queens are ok i guess, but using them is much better. Looking at something pretty is meant for wall art and wood grain. Knives are tools to be used :) Like you said, functional art.

FFG would make it more slicey and if you like the anno colors, annodize away! I am a big fan of the blue acid wash or black/gray acid wash colorways. So I say do it!

There is beauty in perfection but some say that is boring

It is your knife, do what you want with it....or do want you want, within the law :grin-sweat

That said, a lightning anodizing sounds awesome.
I personally like the idea of the choil. The Paysan already has a notch, so a choil doesn't add a snagging spot. I only see the advantage and nothing bad.
If you go FFG, I would make sure, that the writing on the blade is conserved. The Spyderco logo and the designers mark excluded, of course. But some missing letters of the location or the "Spyderco" would bother me.

That choil-idea makes a lot of sense indeed - and for me for a better knife, like you I can´t see any disadvantage, just an improvement.

And for the grind: Imo this should have a hollow-, not true ("non hollow" sabre grind, but ffg would be nice too .

Actually, a (much...) cheaper version of that thing with the choil and a hollow or full flat grind would be quite appealing to me.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Yep, excellent point! Modifying it to me would be some patina and scratches and character from carrying it!

But it’s your knife….
