Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight

#1

Post by engine »

I order Manix 2 Lighweight in CTS BD1N Steel.
Of course now I want to know everything about the new pet. First of all, I am interested in the hardness of the steel and the toughness? How much is that HRc ?
I found that compared to VG10 it has less hardness but more corrosion resistance and is easier to sharpen.

Actually, CTS BD1N is run a bit harder than VG10, around 60 HRC, from what I have seen..

You are going to love that knife. Every time I pick up one of my M2 LW knives (I have 3) I fall in love all over again. The more you use them, the better they get and the better the lock gets. That was a great choice.

I’m no steel expert but as of right now it’s my favorite knife…Blade hq has a knife steel chart you can check out as well as Knife Steel Nerds…also Outpost 76 on YouTube does thorough reviews…my experience w/BD1N has been very positive. HRC is 60-63/decent toughness/ok edge retention/good corrosion resistance and to me easy to sharpen…I’m rough on my Manix and it just comes back for more…you might want to consider getting the magnacut model when it is released but that’s a waiting game👊

I've never seen it live, I'm not even sure how big it really is. Anyway, I can't wait for it to arrive.

he's saying these have pins like the manix lw used to have before recently moving to screws. that means you can't take the knife apart to clean it, which is probably not necessary, but more necessary for a steel like m4, since it's not stainless. and i mint green just isn't a very popular color for a knife handle. most people that buy these m4 exclusives from bhq buy them despite the color, rather than for it.

All this fretting over pinned construction. I have a carbon steel knife I've had for 50 years now, pinned construction as were all knives back then. Still works just as well as it ever did.

IMO, its a non-issue except to those who like changing the hardware. I didn't let the pinned construction stop me from getting the M4.

i don't think people would be saying so much about it if the lw hadn't recently changed to screw construction. don't get me wrong... i'd probably see this knife and state my case again about how they should have screws instead of pins and how i'd never buy a tool steel knife with pins, but i think that's on the verge of becoming less true since i'm actually tempted by this knife. the price helps that though... if this knife was $150, it would be way less tempting than it is.

Didn't BHQ also do the G10 in that ugly green? Maybe someone over there is a fan of English auto racing? Environmentalism? Marvin the Martian? If I just had to have that knife, it would be getting a warm bath in red Rit dye.

BD1N is not tool steel, have very good stainless properties. That means it will be like new for long time.

yes. like i said, it shouldn't be necessary for stainless. i was just answering your question. personally, i still like to be able to disassemble stainless knives because i had a spot develop on my xhp manix lw and i was barely able to reach it to clean it up. as long as you keep it dry and clean, you won't have issues with bd1n.

The way I look at it, Spyderco would not put a crappy steel in a Blade.
The action in my Manix 2 is quite stiff. However, it has loosened up a bit. As a basic knife, the Manix 2 is awesome with great egos and my blade is freak'n sharp!!!
Here is mine.

Ladybug, I agree. For me, the price and steel trump all. I do imagine that if this offering were screw construction, we'd be paying considerably more. I don't dislike the idea of screwed construction. But, would probably find myself tempted to disassemble something that I should probably leave alone. It will be a huge benefit though for those that like to customize, and for that I welcome the changeover, even if it necessarily benefit me directly. I like that Spyderco listened to their customers though!!!!

i don't know if it's been awarded, but the manix lightweight is one of my favorite knives of all time. it's basically perfect for me.

and, fyi, my name is ladybug because the spyderco ladybug was my first knife as a kid. i'm a dude though. no offense taken... it's an honest mistake.
