pocket clip & lanyard hole?
pocket clip & lanyard hole?
Why is it that so many spdyercos (and maybe other brands) have the pocket clip and a lanyard hole? Do many people use the lanyard hole and if so, for what?
Thanks!
Thanks!

alds,
I know of a pretty good reason for why a person should use both. Have you ever seen a Royal Canadian Mounted Police person with a holster, gun, and lanyard? Just because you have a holster does not necessarily mean you should not use a lanyard. I would only assume that the clip and lanyard would serve for the same reason. Take paddlers for instance. They probably don't want to lose the knife in the water just in case they drop it. Hope that this helps.

I've never seen a Royal Canadian Mounted Police person with a holster, gun, and lanyard, but I have seen US National Guard soldiers with the same. I understand why some people would use a lanyard and other attaching method (holster, sheath, clip), but it seems to me that most people carying a spyderco would not do so.

I don't use the lanyard hole for attaching a true lanyard (like Travis's Mountie example). Instead I often use it to attach a "fob". I find these help to draw a tip-up carry knife from the pocket.
Here are a couple of examples using a coil knot tied using rawhide. I'll follow Travis's example and let you guess the models.

Is that ball knot also known as the monkey's fist knot? I've tried but can't seem to get that one. That's why you see the zipper pull fob on some of my knives - it's the easy way!

Lanyard holes - and lanyards - are useful to hikers, mountain climbers, boaters, skydivers or military jumpers, rescue personnel or just anybody else where losing the knife could have disastrous results. The nice thing about the lanyard hole is it doesn't take up any room so, if you don't need, just don't use it but, there are plenty who do.
What if the Dodo did have a lanyard hole? I made some modifications to a photo to see what it would look like, and where you could do it. What do you think?

Saw the ball knot here, wanted to do one, spent a week trying and trying. Spent as much time chasing marbles around the room as trying to tie the darn knot. Every time I thought it was looking good, the blasted marble would pop out! Someone at work suggested using a die (think that's the singular of dice) as the core. Worked like a charm for me.

Deacon, I like that. That is the first time I've seen both knot styles at once. It looks very grippable. Nice work.

It is the new self-clipping lanyard. I probably could move it down a little. Ideally the clip bolt could be replaced with a hollow one that would solve the problem of drilling a hole. :o <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
