Pls Help! Big Issue with my FB05 Perrin

#1

Post by hannes w »

Hi All,

Some weeks ago I received my first Spyderco fixed Blade a Perrin Streetbowie.

Till today it had only minor kitchen duties (chopping veggies, slicing chicken and bread).

I deceided to put it in the dishwasher (maybe 3 times, washing with 35°C in an extra knife tray)

after I read that Sal is washing his VG10 Delica also in the dishwasher.

Today I noticed to my terror a HAIR TEAR/CRACK on the back of the blade.

It's just between the highest point of the swedge and where the swedge grind starts

going ca. 2mm on one side over the whole back and down the other side for ca. 3-4mm!

I never droped the knife (the point is as pointy as one can be) nor pryed anything with it, it is still as shaving sharp as it came due to my very light use.

What for heavens sake can cause such a crack and what should I do about it?

As a matter of fact I've lost the faith in this particular spydie. :-(

On sunday I will be on a days hike (7-8 hours)and will carry my trusty Gin1 Police SE

and my beater, a Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter in AUS8 with me instead of the Perrin...

Hi Hannes,

It's hard to believe that the relatively low dishwasher heat caused this. I suspect it was a small pre-existing flaw.

I would return this one to the company in a heartbeat. If you need a personal contact, Mike in customer service is great.

Yep .... Send er back to Spydieland and don't sweat it. Make sure you call them first. I had a minor issue with a SE Temperance kydex sheath and they made it right within a week.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the Bowie. I also advice you to send it back, they should replace it.

I wasn´t going to say this, but here it comes; I hate the Perrin FB!! The handle is too small (And has, IMHO, nothing to do in the MBC world!) the blade it too hard!! It cracks or brakes when being abused (Tests show this in Messermagazin). "Well you shouldn´t abuse your blade" say some people. However I like to know that a blade I´ll trust my life, can take a beating... Teast it if you dare! Get this baby to pry under hard presurre, it will breake! It´s too small and too brittle! I will pick any of the other Spydie FB´s over the Perrin when it comes to defense!! "Even" the FB01 is much better for defense and camping....
I know you´ll hate me for this, but since Allen has been sick, everybody is just padding back and lovin it!! Let´s be real, and get back to helping out Sal and his wonderful company...
Vox.
The one Spydielover that can´t have any!!!

Got to agree with Vox on this one. The Perrin never felt "right" to me either. I'll take a Temperance anyday!

However, the steel is a different issue. No knife should crack after exposure to a dishwasher (although I've never tried it, and probably never will!) Send it back. Talk to Mike.

I always liked the blade shape of the Perrin, but the handle just didn't do it for me. The finger groove is WAY too big in my opinion. I bought a Perrin off Ebay a few months back and got the Temperance in a passaround a day later. After handling the Temperance, I sold the Perrin the next day.

It's a nice concept, just needs some work in the handle area.

Oh man am I pissed. I just typed out this huge reply and accidentally hit the esc button. 4 paragraghs gone...
All right for the second time. I must disagree with some on the comfort, I love the way the Perrin feels in the hand. The design is excellent. NOw as to the other concerns I am not aware of these. I Have been thinking about EDC'ing the Perrin for a few days now. I think I will light a candle under my @#$ and EDC this Spydie for a month. I use my Perrin for camping/hiking/hunting but with my wedding this year I have not had the chance to really use this knife since I got it in May. So I am going to take the Perrin to task. I would hate to be out in the wonderful wilderness and end up with sub par blade. I am not by any means going to abuse this blade but I am going to try and put it through the paces. Tomorrow I am going to carry this baby for a month and see. Right off I think I might have issues with the sheath but no biases at this time. Lets find out...more to come.
I do like the Temp FB a lot too, but when I chosse the Perrin I liked that it had the larger blade. time will tell. Take care and thanks for giving me the purpose to carry a FB for a month to see what the Perrin is made of.

Vox,
You'd better watch what you say about that particular FB. Word has it that it's cursed! Whenever someone talks bad about the Perrin, Fred himself appears out of no where to kick your ars!
Good luck <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

<b>Regarding Fred and posteriors:</b> Fred's only got two legs for them butt kicking forays so I guess I'll just take a number and relax while I add my nickel.

I like most of the Perrin's ergos but consider it more of a kitchen bowie and light camp use knife than a hard user. The Temperance has it beat as both a tough outdoor user and the handle divots give it easier indexing capabilities for MBC use. The Perrin also necks down pretty narrow at the choil and though I don't use Fred's FB as a pry tool, if I had to, I would be far more concerned about stress risers and breakage in this FB than the Temperance. I don't think you're going to slide off onto the blade with either FB but the combo of the ridges and the rise of the blade make a more effective guard/stop on the T than does the straight from the handle Perrin. Although shorter overall, the Temp has almost to 2 ounces over the Perrin - it's just a brawnier knife. Unlike Vox, I like both blades and will chose to use according to the situation. It's just that there are more situations I would use a Temperance than a Perrin. And yes, I will put my money where my mouth/post is....I have four Temperii vice a solo Perrin.

Never had a problem with steel cracking but I'm in agreement with Swede at al. Contact SFO and send that puppy packingto Golden.

huh a pretty nice discussion in the meantime... :-)

@ swede
could you please give me mike's email adress
I have to check with him regarding shipping costs an customs.
I paid allready 28,5% VAT/Import tax and would hate to pay it twice.

@ all
reg. Ergos Perrin/Temp

I like the handle and would rate it 8/10 but I would like to see a broader blade by 0,5"
with some belly to it like the J.Fitch Hogbody Bowie (reduced to 5,5&quot<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>.
This thing would be a real blast in the kitchen.

With the original blade shape it's a so so in the kitchen one one hand an incredible
slicer but on the other needs a little attention on the cutting board.
Still its way above the Temp regarding the grip angle/cutting motion.

Regarding MBC/SD

For me the Temp looks like the beefier design but the Perrin shines in concealed/urban carry
and I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of either blade.

Hannes W,

You're computing with new rocks??? Click on that there magnifying glass thingy and use (without the plusses):

: + ) for <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
: + ( for <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
: + P for <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
; + ) for <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
} + { for <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

As for the green smiley in your hogbody statement, there are some type combos that do that and I haven't figured out why. Sometimes with parentheses, I'll just add another space to make sure that doesn't happen. You can also click on the Edit icon on anyone's post to view the commands and find out how a lot of effects are done.

Keep us updated on the Perrin, dude.
