The black blade has, so far, always followed the satin blade for the mint green BHQ exclusives, right? I'm guessing you'll get your mint/black -- which is a stunning visual combo. BHQ probably sells the satin first because they know a lot of people will then get the even more attractive black as well -- and possibly not buy them both, if in reverse order.
(While I love the look of the mint/black combo, I'm a ninny for rubs and marks on the black, so my OCD acts up less with plain satin blades.)

Re: Blade HQ Mint Green M4 Manix LW
I think I am more than content with my beloved REX 45 version for a tool steel Manix LW (also love the burnt orange scales, but mint would not be my first choice).
Trying to keep my line up slim too.
Should I ever loose or break my REX 45 Manix LW though (both very unlikely), I'd probably kick myself for not getting the M4...

I think you need the M4, Warty. Here's why, as explained in a Larrin graphic:

Re: Blade HQ Mint Green M4 Manix LW
I’m still kicking myself for not getting the Rex45 Manix. I remember the lightweight took longer to sell out than the other Rex sprints. I wasn’t interested in the model at the time, but of course as these things go, now I am. Not much of a fan of the mint green, but I caved. Looking forward to it. Might be my first dye project.Wartstein wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 11:41 pmI think I am more than content with my beloved REX 45 version for a tool steel Manix LW (also love the burnt orange scales, but mint would not be my first choice).

I never tried M4, but from what I read here and also from my own experience with REX45 I figure in how Spyderco does these two steels REX is really not that "inferior" to M4 as Larrins chart would suggest. I think Spyderco runs REX45 harder than they do with M4 - ?
Here is a short, already quite a bit shared here vid by Shawn / BBB (as most know anyway also the "15Vguy", he definitely knows his stuff) where (Spydercos!) REX 45 can actually take more than M4 in a rather brutal edge stability test.
https://youtu.be/WOpu13O_OFE
Anyway, I always feel like that the REX45 in my Manix punches clearly above the weight class it should be in according to various charts
As far as I know folks who know a lot more about steels, like Rick/Tkok83Spy for example, would probably second this

Re: Blade HQ Mint Green M4 Manix LW
I second this. I have a lot of Rex 45 and M4. I love M4, but Rex 45 has impressed the **** out of me, and I think it outperforms M4 in all of the ways that I use knives.

Re: Blade HQ Mint Green M4 Manix LW
That's what I've experienced, as well. I've seen charts like the one above which seems to refute my personal experience. Those charts may be produced in a controlled laboratory environment, but you can't slice a pizza with a chart.

Re: Blade HQ Mint Green M4 Manix LW
Yeah, as said, same here... and I really don´t have that fine feel for steels like many others here, but still in my use it is clear that Spydercos REX 45 does better than all that charts would suggest. Perhaps the main reason being indeed that they are running it quite hard and this is the optimum for this particular steel ?!
/ Actually now I start wanting to compare M4 to REX 45 myself... perhaps I should try and direct a mint green knife towards Europe, after all I really like the Manix LW platform a LOT...

Re: Blade HQ Mint Green M4 Manix LW
The charts that show toughness can be misleading when it comes to knives. A tough material can absorb a lot of energy by deforming. So Rex45 might not be as tough but it can handle more peak stress.Wartstein wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 10:57 am

Looking at this chart the one with the most area under the curve will have the highest toughness value.
Edit: left side of chart should be labeled stress.
Re: Blade HQ Mint Green M4 Manix LW
So! What I've learned from this thread is that I need both an M4 and a Rex 45.
Why am I not surprised.
