Easy Paddle Strop

#1

Post by WyoJon »

Ive used stropping to finish edges for quite a while. While I find chrome oxide and iron oxide work well on razors, ive found something better in the wood working world for knives.

It is called Herbs Yellow Stone. Appears to be aluminum oxide from what I can find, which is what corundum is composed of. This stuff cuts FAST and leaves a mirror edge.

Here is an easy way to make a paddle strop that is effective.

Some nylon rigging strap glued to a board with silicone, works wonders for holding a stropping compound. You can buy these straps by the yard on ebay for a few bucks.

It seems paddle strops give a more precise edge than a hanging strop because the strop has less give. Likewise, I prefer thinner stiffer materials such as rigging strap over thicker softer leathers.

The compound is a peach color, in the second picture I had taken 25 strokes on it with my native 5, you can see from the steel transfer how agressively this compound cuts.
