New Manix 2

#1

Post by mongo1958 »

Just found and ordered a new Manix 2 from Amazon FOR $101.
Yeah it has rivets but some of my other knives do too.

I'm not sure but it will be the cheapest Spyderco that I've purchased so far.

The M2 LW is a great knife that is not too expensive. I love mine and it has the new screw construction!

Ladybug,
It's going to be hard to beat the Para 3. I also have a Houge Ritter MK1 G2 that I like a lot as well, it is the inspiration for getting the Manix 2. I want to compare the the ambidextrous ABLE™ Lock to the Ball bearing lock.

And that's absolutely ok. I still have my first Manix 2 LW with BD1 steel and like it a lot. It cuts more cardboard than you'd think and it gets wicked sharp relatively easily. My second Manix 2 LW was just like the one in the OP's picture. I gave it to my friend and he absolutely loves it, even with BD1 steel
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

I'm guessing that the N is added nitrogen. It will do just fine for my needs and if it needs to be resharpened,
then I will resharpen it. The price was the driving factor. I also have other knives with better steel so I will not be found wanting for anything. My motive here is curiosity of the lock. If it turns out that I must have a better Manix 2, then I will look into it later on.

Love the lightweight Manix. Got mine a few months ago, also with pinned construction, which hasn't been a problem so far.

It is ok of course, and I did not mean to spoil Mongo his purchase!

Just as the most unscientific and un-empirical experience ever:

I was not too impressed with the edge holding of my first BD1 Manix 2 LW and sold it eventually.
Then I came back to the model (actually with an translucent blue version) in BD1N about two years later and was really surprised with how good it held an edge in relation to how extremely easy it was to sharpen, even or an non-sharpening-pro like me.
This completely subjective layman impression can be due to several reasons though, does absolutely not have to mean that the upgrade in steel is really that big!!

@ Mongo: This is also not meant to "spoil" your joy with the new Manix, but I´d always be careful when buying knives at Amazon (I personally don´t at all now for quite some time now):
Firstly, they are not an official dealer for Spyderco anymore, as far as I know
Then, even if an independent dealer sells on Amazon, returns come into a "general pool" and are resold from there: So you might (just might!!) get an example someone has already returned for some flaw (perhaps just sticky action or something like that), the dealer could not check themselves and now you get the piece delivered.
So, all I am saying: Check your knife throroughly when it arrives (I am pretty sure it will be fine anyway! :smlling-eyes )

Speaking of action: The Manix 2 LW to me is a knife with a lot of variety concerning that matter, at least among the I thzink 4 pieces I had so far. Some really buttery smooth and drop shutty, some rather sticky and pretty hard to dial in (to me personally not an issue though, I don´t need "drop shutty" at all).
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Man, I had that exact same model!

And while I would not want EVERY Spydie to come in translucent, I think it is very cool to own at least ONE that does!
Also really liked the stonewashed (at least not shiny) blade!

In order to keep my collection of users slim, I forced myself to stick with my REX 45 version as my one and only Manix 2 LW (could never be without (at least) one!!), but I am actually missing my translucent BD1N version. Also for the extreme ease of sharpening...

Mr, Wartstein,
No joy lost here. Also, good points that you offer up. Yes, the dealer is listened in the Spyderco web site, I looked them up.
My PM2 was also an Amazon purchase and it looks very good but I'm not an expert. Your points are well taken and appreciated. My Para 3 was ordered from Blade HQ. My Houge Ritter MK1 R2 was ordered from Knife Works..

Thanks

Yours will certainly come with a pivot SCREW, not pin (only early iterations had a pinned pivot), just if the handle will be pinned or screwed remains to be seen...

I had,/have several pinned Manix LW (except the pivot, it had a screw on all): No problems whatsoever.. :smlling-eyes

Just found and ordered a new Manix 2 ....

And, Mongo, I have to say:

Amazing how you joined the forum merely two weeks ago but already show the enabler-skills of a seasoned forumite... ',:-| ..... ;)

.... though I am actually more than happy with my REX 45 burnt orange Manix LW, now I want a translucent blue BD1N variant too once more

Here are some pics of the one I had... oh those romantic memories... :grin-sweat
