Dare I say… DF2?

Hey y’all,

As y’all know, I’m new to folders. My Spyderco collection has tripled over the last 2 weeks or so with the additions of the Para 3 and DF2.

Initial impressions of the Para 3: my god, this is considered a “small” knife? This thing is hefty. Feels very well made. Compression lock is really fun. I liken it to a Glock 19 in size. A wharncliffe blade for the Para 3 would be a boon. But unsure how much time it’ll be in my pocket cuz I do already carry a larger CCW.

Initial impressions of the basic DF2 Wharny: I can see why this little knife has a cult following. It disappears in the pocket, is super slicey, and perfect for my hands (full 4 fingers for me). The spidey hole really grips my thumb when opening which is a nice thing. It just fits.

Keep in mind, I’ve done exactly 0 “hard use”; as I’m not a lumberjack, a miner nor a farmer. But I use em as often as I can even when It’s unnecessary (like opening a box of waffle mix, Kodiak of course)

That’s it fellas. A noobs initial impressions of some big time models in the spydy kingdom.

In the *edc pocket knife* category of knives, the pm3 is not a small knife. it’s certainly in the mid size range.

I EDC a Manix 2 most days, so the P3 is on the smaller side for me. Several here carry even larger blades as their EDC!

The DF2 and 3 are really great choices, however.

There is a whole world of small Spydies to explore. The DF2 Is not my favorite among them, but it was my first one and I have long had two.

My wife carries a serrated Dragonfly hawkbill Salt model. It's a pocket chainsaw. Highly recommended!

Also, I consider the Para3 a small knife. It's all relative though.

I consider the PM2 a small knife but I love the Mcbee I would love to see a DF2 Wharnie in titanium and or CF or G10

The DF2 was a sleeper for me.
It was my first Spyderco together with a Pac salt and a PM2 I ordered from the US, but it didn’t click with me at first and spent most of its first few years in a drawer.
Long story short I now have 3 more DF2s and it’s my most carried model by far.
For reasons such as discreet carry and pocket separation I’ve come to carry loose in my back pocket in urban settings, and the DF2 is the largest knife I can carry that way without noticing it when sitting down. It’s also large enough to provide a secure grip and cut 99% of the stuff I run into at work or coincidentally throughout my day. Quite the perfect compromise.

Most of the knives I find too big for casual EDC are dismissed for their thickness rather than their length and width. This is the case for the Para 3, which I agree is not a small knife, but even something like the rather small lil’Native is quite bulky for its size and loose out to the thinner models.

There are other uses outside of typical EDC where thickness doesn’t matter as much or is even preferable, but EDC is the primary driver for pocket time.

This is our most used knife at home:

• pink s30v near the front door for packages

• teal s30v in the home office for odd jobs

• SE H1 salt gets carried a lot and is also used in the garden

• vg-10 wharncliffe in the master bathroom for opening packaging

• k390 leaf blade gets carried a bunch. on me right now.

• k390 wharncliffe gets used a lot for cardboard

• two 20cv ones. one gets carried a bunch when I don't need serrations but still suspect it'll get wet/sweaty. The other is the backup because it was an exclusive.

• blacked out frn cruwear, just because

I love these. I wish there was an lc200n version, blacked out, with serrations. The serrations help in the garden, but the sun reflection blinds me when I use my satin blade. And I prefer lc200n over H1 (and I guess H2).

Yeah I can get the relatively thing. I carry a CZ75b many days of the week which is seen as nuts among many. I guess I’m the opposite with knives. I think I intuitively like itty bitty blade

I've got at least 10 of the little giants. The DF2 is simply a great design for a pocket knife.

You don't need more.

Dfly is EDC, Para for fun and house stuff.

Dude Wharny is so good. I don’t hunt, so I don’t need to skin anything (Apparently that’s the best use for a belly??)
I’ve tried to find cuts that are easier with a belly and I just can’t find one.

I may be wharny for life. It also happens that I love how their aesthetics.

I´ve always been saying that "the Chap is my DFly" but lately I more and more want to try the latter too... but the best version for what I´d carry it would probably be an H1 Wharnie SE (for the hollow grind and stronger tip). Not an option though, it seems...
