How to know if my new Siren is pre or post CQI?

#1

Post by TheGiant80 »

The retailer I deal with just marked down the LC200N variant Siren, and so I obviously had to pull the trigger as I now live in the rain forest.

After clicking submit I recalled hearing about the pretty intense lock failure issue that has since been dealt with via Spydie’s CQI program. Checked a video or two and read an article and now I’m the opposite of stoked.

Are there markings on the knife itself, or any sort of product code information on the box I can refer to in order to see if my new Siren is pre or post CQI?

Cheers folks!

The box's date code will tell the tale. There was almost a year long pause while it was being worked on, and then it came back in January of last year IIRC. Jan 22 is AV code, so anything that or later will be cqi

Edit if you want to know more about the box date codes, the Deacon's post here has it viewtopic.php?t=66373

My Siren has date code GU, which makes it pre-CQI, but it has black hardware.

Perhaps you are thinking of the Spydiechef, which indeed got black hardware as part of its CQI.

I know I have the CQI model because I was an early adopter and my original had the problematic lockup. Spyderco replaced mine with a new one.

I mention this to draw attention once again, for the benefit of newcomers, to the fact that Spyderco took back a lot of questionable Sirens and replaced them with brand new ones of this spectacular knife. Who does that these days?!

I thank Forum members and Spyderco. I would not have known about the problem, but members posted and saved me a lot of hassle . Spyderco did a fantastic job correcting the issue and a wait for the CQI was worth it . Dan

Oh thank you for this thread! I just got my Siren yesterday. I knew very well about CQI thing long ago, asked a dealer in advance and they confirmed it is CQI, so I was sure. Now checking the box and there is HT (August 2020?) code! :(((

My CQI siren has a relief bevel in the lock pawl.

No problem, sir.

Would you by any chance be able to post a photo of this relief bevel. Curious to see the changes Spyderco made to improve the Siren.

Thank you for the photos, Dodge.

It does look different from my Siren, though I can't get a good shot of it.

Glad I found this thread. I know mine is pre CQI both by when I bought it, as well as it exhibiting the bad lock up as soon as tested it with my hand completely behind the lock. In use I noticed it, but thought it was just my hand depressing the lock. I left a message with W&R about it as it isn’t reassuring to have the lock slip out like that. It seems like it may not be a safety issue since for me it appears to engage the lock again once you back out of the cut, but I just don’t like seeing behavior like that from my locks.

Thank you! You’re actually the reason I decided to give it a go again. When the model was first released I bought one and sold it because I felt the G10 was too rough and the model was too small for my hand. Our conversation got me to reconsider that decision, and then my retailer put the thing on sale. Had to pull the trigger!
