Blade type what you like?

Postby akapennypincher » Thu Jan 19, 2023 3:50 pm

Serrated?

Half/N/Half?

No Serration’s?

Why❓🫠

Plain edge for me.

I have a few serrated knives and, because of the great instructions from David and Vivi, I've learned how to make them sharp, but I just do a quicker and better job with a plain edge. Maybe not really better, but more consistent. Also, I find that SpyderEdge steers in cuts somewhat, and I don't care for that.

Well...

I don't like to say one is better or worse, just that one works better for me and that's full serrated, or at the 80% serrated that Spyderco tend to do, I do find use for that half inch or so of plain edge at the tip.

Main reason is how they grab material, it's less about sharpness and starts to be a weird kind of mechanical advantage. You can sort of grab things with the scallops and pull cut them. Materials never slip off without being cut.

Your own preferences will depend on what you cut the most. Just keep an open mind and try out everything for yourself. I know that's asking a lot when knives aren't getting any cheaper but there are some great options in the budget lineup to test the water.

PE for those smooth clean cuts.

It depends on the knife design, how I’m going to cut things with it, the geometry, and the steel.
For a lot of general use knives, I think serrations are good. For example, I was glad to hear Eric comment in a recent interview that they will indeed make some serrated Military 2s and probably serrated K390 Enuff 2s and LT3LWs as well. The latter two were more implied, but I think the serrated versions just weren’t announced because they aren’t ready yet.

I use my knives for self defense, and I prefer plain edge like a Native Chief.

I prefer PE. I could probably do most tasks with SE, but I wouldn't be able to carve things or do really fine cutting. I tend to prefer smaller knives which seem less practical with SE and I don't do a lot of tasks that would benefit from SE.

I'm not a fan of half & half. Feels like the worst of both worlds.

Mostly full plain edge, with a handful of fully serrated models for yardwork.

Shallow serrations on a flat grind. Nothing better!

In "rougher" carving SE actually works great and better than PE in my use, due to the chisel grind of the former (talking 'bout carving a notch in a stick for example)

Fine cutting can be done very well with just one of the scallops (or the PE part at the tip most spyderedged folders offer)

And imo ESPECIALLY small knives profit from SE, since it effectively lengthens the edge (and gives better edge retention).

Just my 2c of course.

I prefer plain edge. Works better for me overall and simpler for me to sharpen.
I've never been lost. A bit confused for a month or three maybe, but never lost.

For me it is just the other way round and SE simpler to aharpen (just one side has to be sharpened (chisel grind), one does not have to follow the curve of the edge in the way it is with PE, and the right angle can be "felt" much better).

See this great post by Vivi on this (including two short clips).

Ymmv of course, also depending on the available sharpening equippment.

Yeah I couldn't agree more. I EDC one full plain edge ( mostly M390 Military) and one full Spyderedged unit ( my treasured Stainless RESCUE model). I do rotate my EDCs but I always have one full PE and one full SE on me daily.

I probably do about 70% of my work with the full SE and about 30% with a full PE blade. I truly find many viable uses for both edge types.

As far as types of blade designs I lean toward many of the more narrow models like the C-60 Ayoob, JD Smith, The Zowada model as a few examples. For serrated blades I also use full SE Hawkbill blades like the SPYDERHAWK and full SE HARPY.

Spyderco has a blade for almost any application you may need them for.

Neither. I prefer the spyderedge and hollow grinds 😬

P.S. Spyderedge definition : serration pattern created by Spyderco (hence the name) far superior to any other type of serrations. Not to be confused with the “new” serrations used by the same company(with shallow scalops and rounded tips) which some consider to be just a clone 😜

I’ll be honest, I’ve never tried an SE Spyderco, it’s on my list for the future bit for right now PE suits my needs just fine.

Whenever you're ready: You won't go wrong with Carribean, Endela, Stretch XL SE for example...

Nice knives indeed! I was thinking of getting a pm2, simply because I’m so used to that platform I could compare it with what I’m used to in PE. Are the serrations on the pm2 inferior to those models you listed?

I've given SE a try on 3 separate knives, really wanting to like them...even did a reprofile on my Dragonfly to round the scallops, which definitely helped it cut much smoother, but still couldn't get on board. PE all the way for me.
