Canis showed up last night on Spyderco's site!!!
Snapped one up.

But by morning, it was gone!

I've been scanning Spyderco's site daily for two years to finally get that knife...

Congratulations on getting one. Do let us know if the stop pin on the new ones still rattle in the closed position when shaken.

Nice get. MJ did us a solid helping this one to market.

I think the Canis is not as popular here as it ought to be. It’s not really like the Yojimbo in whose shadow it sits.

I love mine.

Yes, please let us know how the detent is, as well. I think Taichung knives have the nicest fit and finish of all the factories, but I don’t like the consistently soft detents of some models. I find it frustrating. It seems like it would be an easy fix.

The only reason I haven't bought a Canis is because of your sentiment above. Well said.

Out of 20 or so models from Taichung, I have noticed that the ones with heavier blades, such as the Gayle Bradley 2 folder, Amalgam or Hundred Pacer, have a detent that is so weak that I can shake the knife open. Smaller models like the Brouwer or Rhino are fairly secure in the closed position.

Or could it be that the detent strength is consistent across the model range, but the heavier blades on some models causes them to shake open more easily?

I'm attracted to this model also; must be the Warnie-ish blade. Kind of glad it's not too readily available.

The detent on the Yojimbo and Yojumbo would be a good benchmark. It’s outstanding on mine.

No problems or issues with my Canis.

And I surpassed 10,000 flicks with the Canis and its fine.

My Thumb, however, is very red and missing quite a bit of skin.....

Not Taichung models but I have a KnifeCenter Cruwear and a Knifeworks green/cts/204p, both with softer detents. They sit in the safe.

ETA-sorry-both PM2’s. I think I have nine total. The rest are pretty solid.

I've always believed that our good Brother Michael Janich is 100% spot on that Wharncliffe designs function quite well in self defense uses. I do thank GOD above that I've never ever had to use one for that purpose but it's always good to be armed with life saving information.

This "Canis" model would also make a great fixed blade version. The original RONIN was such a great SD fixed blade and I always thought that a slightly longer blade would have made it even better.

I think Kelly McCann's Canis started life as a fixed blade design, and was only later made by Spyderco into a folder.

I do agree that the Canis looks good as a fixie.

And then there is the Ronin 2, which is slightly longer than the Canis folder.

Why this knife was made in Taiwan I don't understand. It obviously raises the price on what should be a using knife. Instead as is it leans more toward an art/collector's piece. Something I have a feeling was not Kelly McCann's intention for the knife. Making it in Golden would have put it more in the price range of the Yoyimbo, where it should be. Instead we have an incredibly functional knife that's almost completely unavailable, for all intents and purposes it doesn't exist, and WAY over priced. It's like someone had NO idea how to make it a success. Unless the the blade grinds are too complex for Golden I'm baffled as to why it was ever made in Taiwan.

I can only assume that the full production capacity at Golden was the reason why the Canis was made in Taichung, Taiwan. Looking at its current price versus the Yojimbo 2, it does make one wonder how much the Canis would have cost if it was made in Golden.

Also, its in stock at KSF, CutleryShoppe, BHQ and other dealers. It's interesting that some are selling it at $238 while others have it at $222.25.

Still noticeably higher than the $171.50 price of the satin Yojimbo 2.
