Rebuilding your collection from scratch

#1

Post by vivi »

The thread about which knife you'd replace first was fun.

Some of the replies indicated they'd go full collector mode again.

Others would buy a few folders and call it a day.

What do you see yourself buying if you had to start your collection from scratch?

Assume you have the funds to get what you'd want, but you can only choose models you could realistically acquire in late 2022.

Here's what I'd go with if I had to start over from the ground up:

H1 Pacific Salt PE x2
S30V DLC Manix XL
Native Chief CF/S90V
Aqua Salt PE
Street Beat LW

That for me covers lightweight EDC folder (Pacific), lightweight EDC fixie (Street beat), bigger beefier folder (Manix XL), bigger beefier fixed blade (aqua salt), and something slim and sexy for dressing up (chief).

I like my Military, Resilience, Yojumbo, Street Bowie, Police, etc., but this would be enough to get my feet back on the ground. Really I could get by with just the Salts but it's nice to have options.

What would be your baseline collection?

Manix 2 maybe
Spydiechef LC200N
Chaparral LW
Ladybug or Manbug

Interesting question! My baseline would probably be:

PM2 S90V (DLT exclusive)
Spydiechef
UKPK S110V
Stretch K390
K04 SE kitchen utility
Sharpmaker and diamond/CBN stones

Edit: And a 4V Military :winking-tongue

Dragonfly lightweight for EDC
Para 3 lightweight for household tasks

That's all I really need.

PM2 in CruWear, S110V, and K390.

Stretch 2 in K390 and a standard drop point.

Para 3 in S110V and K390.

UKPK in S110V and LC200N.

I haven't double checked that the K390 PM2 and Para 3 are still available. If not, change those out for Maxamet.

PM 2 Leftie
Dragonfly 2
Delica Warncliffe
Native 5 LW
Salt 2
Enuff Sheepsfoot

There are more that could be added, and some that could be combined to make a shorter list - the Enuff could be a Salt instead of having a Salt 2 - or the Salt 2 could replace the Delica - but the above would do me just fine. So, that’s Forty Spydercos done away with.. 😧🙄😆

Is this the same question as the other thread just asking for more than one knife? :grin-squint

My answer is still the same. To lose my current collection would be too demoralizing to entirely do over. I guess I could compile a “consolation collection” but beyond that, I’d probably just divert my spare change to fishing gear.

My consolation collection of five would be -
Lil Native
Native 5
Shaman
SALT 2
McBee
-Nick :bug-red

I still have the same thought that I would want to grab models that may not be around long, but are currently available. Starting with exclusives still available:
- PM2 DLT Cruwear
- PM2 DLT S90V

I would grab some Sprints because hey, they will not be around long and I am starting over:
- Siren S90V
- Yojumbo S90V

Might as well grab some collabs because they tend to disappear after some time:
- Gayle Bradley 2
- Kapara

From here since I am starting over with the funds, I would honestly wait on other models I like to come around in some interesting flavor. Manix 2 & XL, Native Chief, Military, Endura... I could get the standard version, but I would honestly just wait for an exclusive.

Oh, and I would grab a Pac Salt immediately too. Probably H2 with the hollow grind this time around.

And an other the Inkosi, I would get an Inkosi.

Manix XL , Manix XL DlC , Manix 2 g10 , Manix 2 s110v g10 and custom scales to make them all special to me. :thinking After that i would likely be on the lookout for spydies that are no longer available like the old Manixes,…

But since i almost exclusively carry and use Manixes i would have all bases covered to start a new.

My current Spydercos, and whether I'd replace them and how. I'd actually probably prioritize the sharpening stuff I use from Spyderco more than the folders themselves.

Dragonfly 2 (HAP40) -- definitely, but probably K390, and might do the wharnie blade
SpydieChef -- definitely
Native Chief (REX45 and 4V) -- definitely would re-buy either of those or some other sprint (I want a Magnacut Salt!!) if I could find one
PM2 (DLC S30V) -- definitely, though probably S90V or Cruwear or some other sprint/exclusive
Southard -- nope (but a sentimental favorite I likely won't ever sell)
GB2 -- nope
Caly 3.5 (ZDP) -- nope
Native 5 Salt -- nope
Delica (ZDP) -- nope
Endura (VG10) -- nope

Ultrafine benchstone -- definitely
Sharpmaker with CBN/diamond rods -- definitely
Double stuff -- definitely

Mas Ayoob Sprint is being delivered tomorrow -- we'll see how that fits in!

I'd focus on the salt line... Exclusively:

Salt 2 in each steel and edge configuration
Same for pacific salt
Same for Dragonfly
Spydiechef
Aqua Salt PE

I'd add the other salt models if possible, starting with the upcoming Native Magnacut.

I think starting over I would not try to rebuild my current rotation and instead focus on value and not sentimentality. Salt 2 and a Swiss army keychain would cover all my realistic EDC needs for 2022. I would wait for a nice deal to come along for a larger spyderco folder. Then maybe just get a cheap Mora fixed blade and stop there.

Police4 K390 PE
P'Kal
Manbug K390
Hawkbill Ladybug
Dragonfly SE
Hawkbill Dragonfly
Wharncliffe Dragonfly K390
Stonewash Shaman
Manix XL (4V if I could find one)
S90V Chief if I could find one
Pac Salt

Then I'd start filling out my steel choices in what ever model was convenient. I find that currently I don't carry many 'mid size knives' or small as Vivi would call them. Unless I want to carry them for the steel they have.

I carry micro knives at work and big knives when Im off work. Dragonflys are always good companion knives. Especially the salts.

But I'd start from there and keep adding. I could get by with the first 11 or 12, but I like variety and trying new things. I wouldn't do anything different.

The necessities:
- ladybug k390
- dragonfly K390 wharncliffe
- atlantic salt LC200N PE

For other fun ones:
- bug
- cru-wear ayoob (still available as of writing)
- Sage 1 maxamet (I'd probably have bought this over my para 3 if they were available at the time)
- CPM-15V Manix 2 (hopefully available before 2023)

If there was a wire clip back lock lil native, I'd add that too.

Wouldn't rebuild what I've got now. That took many years and good bang for the buck prices. Mentioned in the other thread I'd start with the knives I've had a history of EDCing. After that I'd probably buy the models I like but probably just one of each and spread different steels around different models. Would probably pick up buying new sprints and exclusives I like such as the rumored 4V Military.

blacked out pacific salt se h1
15v manix

i suppose it says a lot that i could be okay with just these. i really like all the knives i have and would certainly miss them, but i don't necessarily feel the need to buy them all again. i wouldn't get rid of any of them on purpose either though.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

It would be nice to hear what the use cases for items in the collection are.
Personally:
- ladybug: When I'm out doing things that probably won't require a knife and don't want a knife getting in the way.
- atlantic salt: When I'm doing heavy exercise that will soak my knife in sweat and activities where a blunt tip may be safer. Also the sheepsfoot blade is helpful for carving away things from 3D prints.
- dragonfly: For all other situations.

I don't need anything else, but having some variety is always fun.
