What is the first Spyderco you'd replace?

#1

Post by Bolster »

Imagine all your Spydercos are stolen, or lost, or burned, or confiscated, whatever. They're gone.

Which is the FIRST one you'd immediately replace?

This is a little different than asking "what's your favorite." For example, I'd probably replace the Chaparral LW first. It's not my favorite, but it rides next to my iPhone and is almost always on my person; very useful. So that would be first replacement, for me.

Manix 2 of some flavor. Now I know it is it is all I need, I might just stop there.

I would probably go a different route. I would grab one that I use that I fear may not be around for long. Like an exclusive. The DLT Cruwear PM2 or the DLT S90V PM2. Both still available. PM2 is not my favorite model, but currently available flavors that I like.

If an exclusive in a model I like was not available, I would probably grab a collab first. I would get the Gayle Bradley 2. Not sure how long collaborations stay around before being discontinued. I am sure it depends on sales, but I would be concerned of missing out. What is the longest running collaboration model?

HAP40 Stretch. Does everything, big or small job.

Honorable mention, Manbug ZDP-189 is my daily carry.

It would be a Spidiechef. Nearly perfect for my use and still in production.

Gray diamond G-10 Manix 2 in Cru-Wear (which I probably couldn't find?).

or

Green serrated LC200N Pacific Salt (which would be easy to find).

Atlantic Salt PE. It doesn't get the most carry but there are few knives with that blade shape and my sweat tends to destroy other stainless steels when I'm heavily exercising. Dragonfly was a close second but there are plenty of other knives I could replace it with.

this is a tough one for me because the manix is by far my favorite, but the pacific salt in se h1 is probably what i'd replace first.

If we're talking about what is readily avialble to get, G10 Native 5.

If the robber reached out and said, 'ok, you can have one of the knives back', it would be one of the exclusives PM2. Likely the K390.

Hmm… would depend on what was available at the time, but probably the S90V PM2 from DLT. Maybe the Crucarta PM2. Definitely a PM2, though - it’s my favorite “go anywhere, do anything” knife by far.

Great question, Bolster!
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Interesting question. The one knife I should have bought a back up is the Mantra 2 as it is irreplaceable now.

I unfortunately lived through this scenario, back in 2008 my house burned down and I lost pretty much all my stuff. Fortunately I was a 19 kid who hadn't discovered Spyderco yet, so the collection at the time was basically all Cold Steel (lol). If I could I would definitely replace my Moro Barong sword that I had under my bed (could not find a trace of it when I searched through the ruins).
Hypothetically if I had Spydies at the time, I'd probably go for the PM2 to replace first.

My guitars were all at home at the time too, and there was one in particular that I had a difficult time replacing because it was discontinued. Happy news, this year I finally found the exact same model (although with a nicer flamed maple top and better electronics) at an unbelievable price and amazing condition and replaced it. It very much refilled a part of me that felt a bit empty for years (as much as material items can be fulfilling).
