Regrinds of Broken Tips

#1

Post by Bolster »

I've seen some creative regrinds of broken tips. If you have a photo of a broken tip that you've reground into a useable blade, please share!

Not a Spyderco (although I’ve done some). But here’s an extreme one:

Not a spyderco, but I got this knife for free many years ago with a half inch broken off the tip. I managed to get it cleaned up. I seem to have lost all the pictures of what it looked like before I fixed it, sadly.

My regrind on the Road Warrior, my EDC first generation Police. It lost a quarter of an inch when it went through the snow blower.

These ^ look much better than I expected. I have "fear" of broken tips but you guys have done a great job reshaping them so they look good.

I have no pics, but I've had several knives where the last 1/32" has chipped off. It's the most delicate area, so it doesn't take much of a mishap to cause this. Typically, I'll just grind the spine down to meet the original edge. With a little luck, the repair isn't even noticeable.

Ed Caffrey not quite so wharncliffe anymore EBK. Regrind was done by hand, using DMT diamond hones and the Sharpmaker.

Not much to tell, really. Clearing heavy, wet snow a couple of years ago, discharge chute kept packing and freezing so I'd have to stop and unclog it. Engine was a little hard to start and I was getting tired, so I left it running, drive disengaged. Aparently, the drive belt had enough friction to keep the impellor turning, and when I broke through the ice it grabbed the knife out of my (heavy gloved) hand. Backed the machine up a little and found the knife, blade unlocked and half closed, tip broken off square.

Luckily, the Wiki is wrong and the first gen Police is flat saber grind, not hollow grind, so I was able to reshape the tip adequately. Not my first rodeo, I've done a bunch of them over the years.

Well, happily it only grabbed your knife and not your hand!

Nice. It wouldn't have occurred to me to grind a straight line, but I like it.
