OMG! That 4v Manix (scales and the blade) is amazing. I somehow missed that exclusive. I usually don't get to crazy about new knives, but that thing is a unique work of art.abbazaba wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 2:41 pmYa, 4v with the hollow grind. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=81238&p=1269390&hil ... g#p1269390
Not sure why someone would take them off that knife, never mind sell them to me for cheap, but I was there to buy them! AND I gave them the gift of 11 more V's lol. Love the Golden CF in all forms I've had it.
Sorry for the thread drift. I am about ready to spend $$$ on a 15V on the auction site. By all reports 15v is living up to the "hype" and I am not going to miss out on this amazing steel on my favorite Spyderco model.

54 Bess is really impressive. Do you know edge angle, sharpening medium Shawn? (I mean I see 1000 diamond and 1micron strop, but what brand/bonding type stone? Free hand/fixed?)

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
Sorry if this is the incorrect thread to ask this, but I am wondering which Sharpmaker rods to use on this guy. I found K390 to respond pretty well on the brown and white stones. I tend to like that “grabby” feeling. I’ve been contemplating the Double Stuff 2 to get some free hand practice.

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
I got very good results with pretty quick and dirty work on Atoma 140 and 600 grit plates at 15 degrees per side with a few light, slightly elevated passes at 17 degrees per side on a DMT XXF with my 15V Manix. Next time I’ll try to touch it up with the medium Spyderco rods and I’ll also see how 1 micron diamond lapping film works. I was just happy that after a couple minutes I was able to rebevel it from 15 to 17 degrees per side and get a much sharper than factory edge. I can’t wait to put some more time in with more stones like the edge pro diamond matrix stones. Id love to justify the super vitrified diamomd BBB stones, and knowing me at some point I will. I have way too many stones around my house. So few people sharpen that it’s hard to get rid of some older ones I don’t use.

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
Just noticed mine losing some of its bite the other day. Just did a touch up on the Sharpmaker at 15dps with CBN rods, flat side. Maybe 20 passes total and it is possibly sharper than factory.BigFishShamu wrote: ↑Sat Feb 11, 2023 8:18 pmSorry if this is the incorrect thread to ask this, but I am wondering which Sharpmaker rods to use on this guy. I am very happy how easy it was to touch up and how long the edge lasts. Great job Shaun.

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
Sharpened mine up today. I’ve been nervous about it for a while, but I really wasn’t a big deal. Took about an hour, but the bevels were sharpened to different angles so I had to reprofile one. Otherwise it would have been a matter of minutes. What little burr formed came off far more easily than I’ve encountered so far. Stopped at a 35 micron diamond stone and finished with six passes on a diamond loaded strop, three per side each on 1 micron and .5 micron. Scrape shaved arm hair and push cut copy paper. I’m satisfied and gratified. Thanks for all the hard work perfecting the heat treat BBB. And thanks to Sal, Eric, and the whole crew for giving us a shot at so many awesome steels. Variety is the spice of life, and every new Spydiesteel makes each day a little sweeter!

should i buy cbn rods for my sharpmaker to sharpen my 15v manix, or should i buy a guided sharpening system instead? i'm not great at sharpening, but i can get reasonable edges on my knives. i've never reproduced anything on purpose... just use the sharpmaker and keep sharpening until the knife is sharp.

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
I opted for a guided system so I could knock down the shoulders more easily once knives started getting thick behind the edge. All my attempts at reprofiling on the Sharpmaker failed. Just took too long. Come touch up time, I’ll give the SM some love and then finish in a strop.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 12, 2023 12:09 pmshould i buy cbn rods for my sharpmaker to sharpen my 15v manix, or should i buy a guided sharpening system instead? i'm not great at sharpening, but i can get reasonable edges on my knives. i've never reproduced anything on purpose... just use the sharpmaker and keep sharpening until the knife is sharp.

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
Yikes! That's a big question!
The Sharpmaker will help you put a nice edge on your knife. I like the stones that come with it. I'm not fond of the diamond stones because they're too coarse for what I want them to do. I've never used the CBN stones
Now that we have that out of the way, I do the majority of my sharpening on an EdgePro Professional with their diamond matrix stones. The setup is expensive, but if I was to lose it, I would replace it immediately. It's that good. I like the look of the precise angles that the guided system allows me to achieve. I also like that the EdgePro doesn't require that the blade be clamped. It allows greater flexibility. I also like that I can reprofile an edge in minutes, as opposed to hours that I read about on the forums. And of course the most important part is that I can come away with a blade that is very sharp.

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
If you are maintaining a knife most of the time then the rods are the best. If you have found yourself needing to reprofile a knife then the guided system is best.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 12, 2023 12:09 pmshould i buy cbn rods for my sharpmaker to sharpen my 15v manix, or should i buy a guided sharpening system instead? i'm not great at sharpening, but i can get reasonable edges on my knives. i've never reproduced anything on purpose... just use the sharpmaker and keep sharpening until the knife is sharp.
In reality you need both, one to maintain that sharp edge and one the change geometry.
Personally I prefer to free hand sharpen over a guided system when I need to reprofile. Worksharp makes a nice freehand diamond system for less than $100.

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
Agree on the two sharpening systems, I tend to use a guided system to profile knives and the something like the sharpmaker to maintain them. You really need an aggressive guided system if you have to do heavy material take off say the first time you sharpen a knife to reprofile it, or if you have a very badly dull or damaged blade.
So are these done/over? I keep seeing posts saying they've been done for a while now, but we still see a few trickle into dealers off and on lately.

From what I have seen they are in the European market here and there. Maybe, if lucky, they might have some seconds at the store this fall.Toddm wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 6:13 amAgree on the two sharpening systems, I tend to use a guided system to profile knives and the something like the sharpmaker to maintain them.
