CPM 15v Manix 2

Post by VooDooChild »

Lets just start a thread to talk about it.

Questions.
1. Is this the BBB colab, or does it just have his mark and heat treat?
2. Will mere mortals be able to sharpen it?

I dont love brown, but brown also doesnt look bad most of the time.

Price is great for a super super steel folder.

I really hope there are plenty of these. The manix has really grown on me since I got the REC exclusive. And 15v was on my list of steels I wanted to taste test.

No I don't lick the blades. Much...

Okay serious question...

What is the difference between this and the standard run Manix in Maxamet? I know one is FRN and one is G-10 but the steels are very close in performance right? Long edge retention with low toughness and low corrosion resistance?

I do have to say the price point rocks especially compared to something like the new cruware Strech xl at $285.

I have the lw Maxmet Manix and gave away my S30 G-10. Manix2 isn't my favorite model, Ive just wanted to try out 15V for some time, regardless of which model it's in. I was hoping for MuleTeam ..

Not going to lie, I am fairly tempted on this one as I like the Manix platform a lot. But I may hold out for the REC 10V version in either the Manix or Shaman, said they were making it just no idea when. Too many nice knives out there, its hard not to buy them all.

So true. It will be cool having a blade with the BBB logo on it as well!

Tempting, but I will keep waiting for the BBB folder, presuming this is not it.

Looking at the spec sheet between the two, 15V has over 1% more carbon and as the name suggests, nearly 15% Vanadium; over double Maxamet at 6%. Seems that 15V will clock in a bit under Maxamet in overall hardness. Looks to be within the realm of ZDP-189 based on toughness at a similar given hardness to ZDP-189. I think with all that VC, you will see more aggressiveness in the edge vs Maxamet, though not as much raw wear resistance, due to the lower hardness. If these were neck-and-neck in hardness, I would wager Maxamet would be a hair tougher, with 15V still being more aggressive, though this would close the gap on probable assertive wear resistance between the two. Corrosion resistance will be poor, as is the case with Maxamet. Of course, this is all speculative and there are differences in heat-treat that will iron out the details. Shawn (BBB) says 15V is less prone to warping when compared to Maxamet, as well; which could be a factor as to why the cost is much more appealing.

As always, the data sheets do not tell the whole tale and this is just my un-professional assessment from a small amount of effort on my part at this time. This is still a heavyweight in the grand scheme, pushing the upper echelon of steel used in (pocket) knives and I am extremely excited to see if I can score one (or two)!

I'm the happiest camper to ever camp on european websites waiting for this one to drop.
It's so tempting I might even order in the States and ask a US based fella to receive it for me, just to be sure to have one !
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

So... how do you get one? I am assuming there will be a drop date at some point in the next few months?

Interesting! I am European, I live in a country bordering yours. In case it doesn't reach the European distributors, we could try what you mention!

Lets just hope Spyderco makes an effort and makes enough like with the rex Manixes since the model sell’s . So i see no excuse for not making enough pieces, So common Spyderco you can do it i believe in you!

I think even the 1200 piece Sprint Run will go rather quickly - hope there is a decent amount!

Shaun mentioned he helped with the heat treat and steel batch selection

I am so in on this one. Love the high vanadium steels. 15V should be pretty neat stuff. Not sure exactly how it will stack up against something like Maxamet in real world use, but I'm game to find out.

I don't know how hard 15V is to use on a production scale.
Maybe this could limit the numbers.

As far as sprint runs go, I think european always get a shot at them. However, I think that the EU dealers don't necessarily order every sprint run. For example, la Coutellerie Tourangelle sports the PE Ayoob only today, and Knives&Tools only has the serrated version.

Looking forward to it. :)
