Very cool process! Thanks for sharing. Interesting how much different the different steels react. We have a cheap electric tumbler that we experimented with polishing rocks with (very few times), and this post really got me thinking.....
Do you have any method on selecting the rocks that were used?
Thanks again.

Looks good Makunochimaster, I find XHP somewhat of a joy to sharpen and look forward to getting more knives made of it. I'm able to get great results pretty quickly which I can't say for some of the other steels I've sharpened.

XHP is one of my favorites.
If you find it difficult to sharpen, you better not try to stonewash your ZDP, 110V or 204P

Really cool. Good job! I wouldn’t have guessed there to be that much difference in how the two steels stonewashed. Very good experiment and great documentation. Thank you for the info!

I think it's more of a difference between the starting finishes rather than steel, the Ambitious appears to have a lot finer satin finish/scratch pattern from the factory than the Chaparral does. I believe if the OP had carefully sanded down the blade on the Chaparral to a less coarse finish first, that the result would have been a lot closer to the Ambitious.

not too large, then the pattern is more uniform.
====================
Friend made a blackwash with ferric chloride.
Large stones give a rough working finish, like at ZT 0357BW

Interesting. What's the reason for the bold light-grey line along the lamination of the Caly 3.5 I wonder?

Why not put nail polish along the edge? I've seen others do that successfully when attempting something like this.
