ticn good for reflections?

#1

Post by sethwm »

Going to be on a boat a fair amount this summer. In direct sunlight my regular knifes catch the sun and blind the crap out of me. Would a black blade salt blunt reflections?

I feel like dlc would be better at this. But I want a salt and the black blade options are seki.

If I remember correctly, the black bladed Salt knives came about due to a request by some US service members. I'm pretty sure they will meet your needs out on the water without flashing the sun into your eyes.

That's a wild thing to worry about, but yes you'll be fine with a ticn blade.

Absolutely, it makes a lot of difference. I believe it is the primary reason behind the coatings, "light discipline" I think Sal called it.

It might be a bit wild to worry about being blinded by reflections, but it does actually happen to me with some kind of frequency and I have sensitive eyes too. It can totally blind and disorient me for a moment, so I can definitely see how that could become more than an occasional annoyance and turn into a safety concern on the water.

Same. Whittling or doing anything in direct sunlight, catching the sun just right can really stall me out for a moment. I guess you could say I have sensitive eyes as well though, had eye trouble since I was a young'n

Edit: I reminded myself of a scene from an old Star Wars parody called "Hardware Wars". Worth the look.

DLC vs TiCN vs satin. Both of the coated blades significantly reduced glare, and I could not distinguish if one type was better than the other.

Not so wild thing, I've mentioned this issue myself a couple of times here in this forums.

I don't have light sensitive eyes but still it is a real annoyance when working on direct sunlight.

While reflected sunlight may truly be a concern,
especially to folks with some sensitivity, I also think worrying about reflections from a knife while on a boat is pretty wild. As someone who spends 300+ days on boats per year I can say with plenty of certainly that the giant mirror that is the surface of the water is a far larger concern than a knife.

That said TiCN or DLC will both handle those reflections perfectly. Can't go wrong with either coating.

Funny, I've always thought it strange that people would want a coated SS blade. It made sense to me that you'd want a coated tool steel blade but not SS. But the OP's statement brings back memories of when I was young and spent huge amounts of time fishing. On a boat, the glare from the water can be intense, and polished blades amplify that effect.

I do have a blacked out Pac Salt, and IMO it would make a great knife in that application.

Ok, I spent the weekend in the sun with my salt 2. I can confirm that the TiCN did all it was supposed to. It got all scuffed up, and looks to be permanent (I washed it with soap and rubbing alcohol to see if I can clean it up), but it doesn't look bad or chipped. Just has character.

Ugh I'm so unhappy. I just lost my knife somewhere camping. Pain in the *** given how expensive it was to make (had to buy two knives). I think it's a huge deficiency of Spyderco knives that they don't return to the owner like Thor's hammer.

This is the first knife I've ever lost...
