Hey all together,
it has been a very long time since I was here for the last time.
I was not interested that much in the newer knife designs. Then I was extremely lucky to buy a GB1, unused. I disassembled, cleaned and polished it up a little bit, perfect in every way.
I sharpened it and it got extremely sharp with no effort. Then I checked the blade geometry with calipers. And that is when things are going ridiculous. Thickness bte is 0,3mm, and 6mm up from the cutting edge my calipers are showing 0,5mm. This is extremely thin, has to be much thinner than my GB2.
I am so pleased, but a little bit afraid to use it hard. I think that the CPM M4 is heat treated well because of how sharp the edge got with no effort. I sharpened tons and tons of knives, this GB1 is another level.
Are your GB1 that thinly ground too?
Looking forward to hear your experiences.
Best regards,
Oliver

Re: Gayle Bradley 1 Geometry
Well this was interesting...I've got 2 GB1's and had never measured them before.
Date Code: DN (4/14) measured 0.52mm BTE and 0.83mm at 6mm from edge
Date Code: AO (1/15) measured 0.32mm BTE and 0.53mm at 6mm from edge
The only one I've used extensively is the older/thicker ground example and it was reprofiled to 17dps soon after receiving it. I'm glad that I pulled them out and measured, but digging out the boxes was a different story, getting all the boxes back into their box is like playing an extreme game of Tetris!
The hollow grind is MUCH more prominent on the thinner ground AO.
AO on top; DN on bottom

So it goes.

Re: Gayle Bradley 1 Geometry
I had two DB1s and both measured at around 0.6mm BTE. Both were unsharepend at that point. I also had a GB2 later and that one was around 0.45mm (BTE) and one could also notice that difference in cutting. So I am surprised yours is so thin. I did not measure this value higher up the blade, so I can't comment on that.
... I like weird ...
Re: Gayle Bradley 1 Geometry
My GB2 :
0.017" BTE
0.035" / .89mm when reading 6mm behind the edge.
Makes me wanna track down a GB1...

In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.
