"As close to perfection as possible" folder from Spyderco?
"As close to perfection as possible" folder from Spyderco?
In your opinion, what's the "closest to perfection" Spyderco folder? By which I mean: There's little additional refinement possible. A folder so refined that, if you add to it, you start taking away.
For me, it's easy: The Caly 3 and 3.5 seem nearly perfect folding knives to me. Any mod I think of, doesn't seem to improve it (other than upgraded steel of course). For a long time I'd thought a Caly with a comp lock would be excellent, but not so sure anymore. Adding screw construction would be nice IF it doesn't increase the overall size and bulk. I read once where Sal commented that pinning made for a more compact knife. So my vote goes for the Caly, a design which is as near perfection as I've ever seen.
I think honorable mentions would go to the Chaparral and the Caly Jr.

For me, as an EDC, the Mantra 2 comes pretty close to perfection.

I agree! To me the Caly 3 and 3.5 are quintessential folding knife designs and are refined to perfection. simply works fantastic, and something about the way they look just perfectly suits my taste.

UKPK. Between the S110V and Salt versions, they are my perfect ultra light modern slipjoint knives.

the manix 2 is the most perfect for me. when the lw gets screws and magnacut, it'll be even more perfecter. yeah, i know what i said. a dlc magnacut or spy27 g10 manix would be great too.

Re: "As close to perfection as possible" folder from Spyderco?
Much as I love a number of Spyderco models, there's not a single one of my favorites that could not be improved in some way. They are all midlocks, and they all have at least one of these three things I would change.
Most have their lockbars defiled by a Boye dent.
Most have their handles defiled by some provision for mounting a pocket clip.
And a few, including the Kiwi which was the only one which had neither of the other faults, would have been even better if they had been full flat ground.

Pacific Salt for me. All I would do is eliminate the Boye dent. If there were a Stretch 2 XL Salt, then that would be my "closest to perfect."

I think the original C95 Manix was as close to perfect as any knife will ever be, for myself.

Schemp Tuff and Bradley Folder

This soup is too hot!
This soup is too cold!
The Goldilocks Spyderco must have all these features:
1. It must have a CBBL. The Manix 2 is too short, and the XL is too fat.
2. It needs to have a long blade, between the Police 4 and Endura.
3. It needs to have a pretty blade shape, like the Paramilitary 2
4. It needs to have great steel: K390, Cruwear, or maybe Magnacut.

This is a rabbit hole question, it has more to do with everyone's personal preferences than how good the knife really is, because I guarantee you what's close to perfect for me will be totally different from what's close to perfect for many other people and visa versa.

Totally agree , edited my post earlier basically saying same thing expecting many different preferences. I don’t think that’s a bad thing though , Spyderco past and present models offer so much to choose from it’s a natural conclusion. I'm actually going to throw another one out there, and this I think is really quite true: the Military (current CQI version). Truly an excellent design. For me the S110V version is as good as it gets. In fact I may have to get mine out and give it some pocket time when I am able to.

For me, the Sage 5 LW the quintessential Spyderco folder. Love that thing!

I marvel at so many different Spydie models that I cannot help but ask what they have in common.
Well, the Glessers’ design-genius, of course! But, hey, that only explains the first of each model. What about the next 999 (or whatever number) of each?
I suspect many different Spydie folders will be seen as “close to perfection”, and rightly so. I sure can’t disagree with any mentioned so far.
And the why of that is they were produced by various processes, with various materials, and by various nationalities that have all been subject to the Glessers’ design-genius.
