How did you first discover Spyderco?

#1

Post by radioflyer »

Enumclaw's post made me think.

How/Why did I first consider purchasing a Spyderco? What made me choose it if I've never carried a knife before?

Spyderco is the first knife I actually purchased, and certainly the higher price made me a little worried. I'm not a big spender, but since I've had Spyderco, I'll prob. not purchase another brand.

My story: Back around '98 I was at one of those 'catalog stores' and was looking for a pocket-knife. The Spyderco catalog came out and "Wow, these are some cool-looking knives". No friend of mine had any, but I bought a Co-Pilot to try out the line. Obviously I am thoroughly impressed and glad I made the choice to purchase one.

This thread could help Spyderco find ways to market their product to people who don't know anything about knives and how they might be introduced to the idea of carrying. I'd like to hear how some of you found out about Spyderco, and more importantly, from those of you who never had a pocket knife before.

How can Spyderco be more in the public eye?

Greg

Welcome Radioflyer. To your question, I honestly don't know what induced me to take the step into this addiction, but it started with a G10 PE Police Model. Expensive step but undetered I've now collected I think 32 of the bugs.

My first exposure to Spyderco was an ad in a survival magazine around 1990.As soon as I saw it I knew I needed an Endura.I tried locally but the merchants didn't have a clue.I contacted the factory and purchased my first of dozens of Spyderco's.tom.

I had been a sword and kukri collector for some years but it became too expensive to pursue. As Mrs Danzo told me. We needed to spend our money on silly fripperies like furniture. I had always collected SAKs, diving knives and novelty knives on holiday. I bought a CRKT M16 in Australia and then bought a CS Ti-lite. It was addiction from there on with Gerber AF combats and coverts imported from the US. I really didn't like the look of Spydies, but the guys at www.britishblades.com said they were the best folders money could buy. I looked at the Native, fell in love and got a S30V SE. The day it arrived I ordered a S30V PE, which is now my EDC. I then bought a Meerkat and tomorrow a Tim Zowada should arrive. Mrs Danzo has said I can have up to the cost of a Sebenza for my birthday. Do I get a Military, a Ti-salsa and a matriarch, or do I go for for the legendary sebbie?

I saw my first Spydie at an outdoor show. The guy was demonstrating the sharpmaker, and selling some Enduras and Delicas as well.

I didn't buy one then, it would be several years later before I bought my first Rescue. I never should have wasted my money on that Cold Steel SRK. Shoulda bought the spydie when I first saw it.

but if I don't believe it's real, it already isn't. It doesn't have to be proven.

If it doesn't go away, I should still believe it.

1984 Los Angeles county fair. Saw this weird looking onehand opening knife at a booth, don't remember who was hawking them, mebbe Sal? Anyway it was a bit much for me to purchase so I only fondled. My wife snuck back the next day and presented me a Worker on my birthday.

Boy, is she sorry now.

I have always been interested in knives; Gerber, Buck, Camillus folders and Victorinox Swiss Army Knives. In 1998 thru a catalog from Smokey Mountain Knife Works. They had a sale on Spyderco knives, discontinued or closeout. I purchased an Endura, aus-6, FRN, 50/50. My 1st Spyderco knife, was impressed with the quality. Found Spyderco web site, purchased the book "Spyderco Story" was really impressed about the history and goals of Sal Gleeser's Company.
I started purchasing different models available and have been hooked ever since.

In my case, I discovered bladeforums while surfing around, and after lurking there for a couple months, I bought a Delica (this was about a year and a half ago). The hook was sunk immediately . Now, 8 Spydies later...

Previous to that purchase, I had (and still have) a Buck 110 and a Gerber Gator. I still like those, but they're too heavy to carry without sheaths, and I work in a too politically correct environment to do that during the week

Chinook

I love the image of the county fair, your eyes torn between the cotton-candy stall and the smiling genius with his cry of.... 'A knife with a hole, call me mad, ladeez and gentlemen but this is the future of pocket carry....... roll up, roll up and see the hole in the knife!
And as the happy throng gather around the cheerful knifemaster they begin to handle his wares and mutter to themselves '****, what a good way to open a knife.......'

Maybe I think to much!

I first saw a Spyderco in a SF movie named "Screamers". It was an SS SE Police or Endura and it was love at first sight. I was so impressed of the ergonomics the knife was showing I was thinking it's a prop especially made for the movie by some knife artist. After I had Internet access I found that the knife is very real and it's called "Spyderco". Finally i manged to buy my first Spydie (a Ladybug that costed almost my salary on a whole month, but I never regreted). Now I have a lot of Spydies, one better than other, courtesy of my friends forumites

Several years ago, a guy that used to work with our elephants told me how great his Spyderco was. When I finally realized that I needed a "real" knife for work, it was the obvious (and only) choice.

I was busily looking for a cool little knife to carry at college and stumbled upon the Dyad Jnr. I didn't have the money, but grabbed an Endura instead.

I still haven't bought the Dyad Jnr., but the day's coming!

I first saw the movie Cliffhanger about 9 years ago when I was 13 and I thought the helicopter pilot carried an awesome knife (Endura SE). I never saw serrations on a folding knife before and I had to have one. After that, I saw them in the Smoky Mountain Knife Works catalog and coveted that knife for over a year. Then, at some outdoors/bird dog show I purchased a 50/50 Endura for I think $40 or $50, I don't quite remember. But I've been hooked on Spyderco ever since.

A few years ago, I read the novel "Hannibal" (Thomas Harris). Now, the main character uses this knife, the Harpy. The description caught my eye, and, on the spur of the moment, I decided to do an internet search.

Turned out such a knife existed, was available, looked extremely cool, and didn't cost an arm and a leg. Since then . . . well, let's just say Spyderco knives are the only ones for me. :-)
