Comprehensive List of Spyderco Steels

#1

Post by RevMike »

I did a little digging and I didn't come up with what I was looking for. Might just be that I'm no good at searching. What I was after was a list of steels used in Spyderco knives. A checklist for someone that wanted to collect them all... I'm that someone but there are probably others, too. I found some similar topics but they weren't complete or included steels used by other brands. So I figure I'll give it a try and some of you more knowledgeable folks could check my work and see what I might be missing.

This is the final list and I'll keep editing it to add new steels as they are released.

Production Knife Steels:

12C27
154CM
3Cr13MoV
440A
440C
440C (Cast)
440C (M.I.M.)
52100
7Cr17
8Cr13MoV
AEB-L
ATS-34
ATS-55
AUS 6
AUS 8
AUS 8W
AUS 10
BG42
CPM 10V
CPM 15V
CPM 154
CPM 154/S90V
CPM 20CV
CPM 3V
CPM 4V
CPM 440V
CPM Cruwear
CPM D2
CPM M4
CPM MagnaCut
CPM Rex 45
CPM S30V
CPM S35VN
CPM S45VN
CPM S90V
CPM S110V
CPM Spy27
CTS 20CP
CTS 204P
CTS BD1
CTS BD1N
CTS BD30P
CTS XHP
DPS 15/VG10

Elmax
G2
Gin 1
H1
H2
HAP 40
K390
LC200N
M390
Maxamet
MBS-26
MRS-30
N690Co
O1
PSF27
RWL34
Super Blue
Super Gold
VG-10
V-Toku2
ZDP189
Zowada
Z-Wear

Hatchet & Hawk Steels:

5160
D2

Mule Team Only Steels:

9Cr18Mo
COS-3 Cobalt Special
CPM Rex 76
CPM Rex T15
CTS B70P
CTS B75P
K294
M398
PD1
PMA11
SRS13
Z-Max

Clad Only Steels:

420J1
420J2
SUS310
SUS405
SUS410
SUS420

Notes:

I stuck the 440A in for historical purposes. Gin 1 and SUS420 are doubles but both are included only because they were stamped on blades. MagnaCut is in the production list because it's only a Mule at the time I'm writing this but hopefully that Native will be in my hand soon.

Please let me know what I missed.

*edited to add CPM 440V and a section for the Hatchet and Hawk Steels I missed*
*edited to add SRS13 to the Mule Team only and SUS405 to the Clad only lists*
*edited to add MRS-30 and AUS-8W*
*edited to add CPM Rex 76 and M398 to Mule Team only list*
*edited to add CPM 15V and H2*
*edited to add CPM Rex T15 to Mule Team only list*
*edited to add K294 to Mule Team only list*

You’ve put together a comprehensive list already and I haven’t personally cross referenced your list with this one but Spyderco was giving away these Steel Chart posters during the Seconds Sale this past November -

Image

The posters are almost three feet long with details about the amounts of elements found in each steel. This is just the first small section with the names of steels. I’m not sure if this is a complete list of steels Spyderco has used but it’s a good official source of reference, at least.

A list of current production steels could be found in the catalog.

Both of these are good information but I believe are just a reference tool provided by Spyderco. I don't necessarily think that inclusion on this list means the steels were used by them. Perhaps tested and considered but I don't think that a number of them ever made it into a knife.

Again I hope someone can point out if I'm wrong but I don't believe these steels from that list were ever used:
1095
420 mod
425 mod
440B
440XH
A2
CPM 9V
CPM 15V
CTS B52
CTS 40CP
D2
M2
12C27 mod
Vascowear
W1
W2
X15tn

Looking at that list did show me that I forgot 5160 which was used in the Genzow HatchetHawk.

D2 was used on the Szabohawk and Warrior Hawk.

Also, the Serrata used a “Cast 440C” but I don’t know if that’s technically any different than the other 440C Spyderco has used.

Other than that, I personally don’t recognize any of those other steels being used by Spyderco. I believe you are correct in that inclusion on those lists does not mean Spyderco has used it in production.

On my list as CPM 440V which as far as I know is the only way it was designated on blades.

Thank you. Seems that I missed all the hawks and hatchets in my initial list.

I have a Serrata, Q, and S in 440C. I'm pretty sure the Serrata in Cast 440C is the same (or close) as the MIM 440C from the S. I don't think the Q is a cast 440C.

Looking for blade steels or any steel used? The C160 Foundry uses some different Carpenter steels in it's handle, Custom 465 Stainless, and BioDur 316LS Stainless.

Just blade steels but the Foundry is a very cool knife.
