Federal Agencies Issuing Spyderco Knives
Federal Agencies Issuing Spyderco Knives
Is there a list of which Spyderco Knives are issued by which Federal Agencies ?
I know that the Federal Agencies do not widely disseminate this information, but it would be interesting to know what information has been available.

Hey, NASA50:
No, there is no such list.
The Rescue Junior was--and I believe still is--issued to the Federal Air Marshals. Most other unit purchases are not agency wide, but rather small-unit specific.
Stay safe,
Mike

So Spyderco knives do not carry a specific government purchase number for different models ? Correct ? Thank you Mr. Janich !Michael Janich wrote: ↑Fri Feb 04, 2022 8:09 amHey, NASA50:

The USCG issues different versions of the salt series. Several services issue aqua salt fixed blades in survival kits.

Rumour has it, Wayne Enterprises purchases thousands of dollars worth of product a year from Spyderco. As the story goes, they’ve been known to buy dozens of Warrior Hawks in a single transaction but their favorite model is the all black Military Model.

I’m pretty sure the Air Force issues Small Spyder Throwers, to ensure they are always the furthest away from engagement as possible! Small?, because the large are just too heavy.

Re: Federal Agencies Issuing Spyderco Knives
Wasn't the Civilian originally designed for agents (forgot which kind...FBI? Undercover?) who had little to no training for last-ditch self-defense? Now, was it ever actually issued? I don't know; I kinda doubt it.

Re: Federal Agencies Issuing Spyderco Knives
Yes, the Civilian designed for under cover DEA agents who could not be armed with a firearm so they designed a knife that could be used to slash your way out of a life or death situation without extensive training ( possible to be used in foreign countries where carrying a firearm by a US Agent was forbidden). The matriarch was a request from South Africa as a cheaper anti rape weapon for women.
Iirc the Warrior was designed to be sold to Shayetet 13 from Israel but this didn't worked out. The P'kal is still produced to provide law enforcement officers with a RGEI weapon ( but i can't find it anywhere available in Europe). Spyderco used to always develop knives for MBC. Iirc the last one was the yojumbo and the canis.
I used to carry a Spyderco in my LEO years (still do) and Belgian SF carry Spyderco knives ( last time i checked in 2019). I don't know if they are officially procured or not. I know GSG9 of Germany and RAID of France carried Spyderco knives around 2003.

Very interesting information, Thank You for sharing. I would love to know all the times when a Spyderco has been a part of history. I know first-hand that there was a Spyderco "on duty" at certain Space Shuttle Launches and during several FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Take-Down Arrests.

I always preferred the term “shallow water sailer”, but i think the rescue swimmers carried the Autonomy 1 without a safety lock.

Re: Federal Agencies Issuing Spyderco Knives
EDIT:
I’ve looked around a lot online for information on this matter and as far as I can tell no Spyderco Has ever been directly issued by any government or law enforcement agency in the United States.
I may just be imagining things but, maybe I read somewhere that the Spyderco Pacific Salt H1 with the black coated blade is carried by military aviators and other military personal sometimes due to it’s lightweight, corrosion resistance and non-reflectivity. However not directly issued by the military.
The Spyderco autonomy is designed for Coast Guard rescue divers. They made a version with no pocket clip specifically for a pocket on the divers vest. But again I don’t think they were ever issued directly by the military.
Also the Spyderco Jumpmaster was designed for paratroopers to free themselves from tangled lines, but one more time… I don’t think they were ever issued directly by the military.
Additionally the Spyderco Civilian was created for Undercover law enforcement that were not proficient in self-defense with a knife and also could not carry firearms but, for the last time I do not believe they were directly issued by any government agencies.
I hope this at least partially answers your question.

I’ve also heard that NASA sent a Spyderco knife on one of the voyager probes but I don’t know if there’s any truth to that.

Re: Federal Agencies Issuing Spyderco Knives
One thing to note is that issued gear isn’t always necessarily the “best” or most useful. Typically an issued article is a direct result of the contracting process. I know many people who were issued a knife by a competitor company yet that knife never saw any use because it was replaced in the pocket by something more useful…
Something to keep in mind.
