Pivot adjustments

#1

Post by Godzilla68 »

Okat this may be a silly question but when I want to loosen/tighten the pivot on a manix 2, native chief, PM2… am I supposed to be tightening only one side to make fine adjustments? I find if it’s relatively loose, I get a bit of blade play but when I tighten both sides up slightly, it becomes stiff.
Any suggestions or is it just a matter of tinkering until you get it?

Thanks

Just do whatever works.

Spyderco has really tight tolerances and tuning a pivot by hand, especially on a comp lock, can sometimes be a pain. Some of mine seem to have a sweet spot smaller than a millimeter. If I can hit that spot then Im happy.

Thanks for the reply. That’s pretty much what I figured. I was worried maybe only one side was simply for fine adjustments. Back to tinkering.

I watch the tip of the blade for correct blade centering and also check for blade play to set boundaries first. After that, it is personal preference.

Thanks Kobold. Okay, so tightening one side too much uncenters the blade. I will check tomorrow and confirm that my blade is centered and fiddle with it.

I usually only do one side, but I have had one shaman where I needed to adjust both. I couldn't get good action with no play without messing with both sides. If that happens I will loosen both sides, tighten one to where it just starts to bottom out (just past snug), then fine tune with the other side. It works for me.

I don't mind a little play when the lock is disengaged. As long as it locks up solidly I'm fine with it.

Exactly the same way I handle this, has never failed.

Okay so I adjusted all of my knifes. Thanks for all the advice. Worked like a charm. I even removed the blade from my Caly 3.5 no issue.
Next - replace the ball lock on My manix 2 with red flytanium aluminum version and replace the bearing - with a ceramic bearing.
