Mini Manix. Manix 3. Or is it a Sage 6?

#1

Post by Crox »

I really love my Manix 2 regular, lw, and XL versions. I especially like the CBB lock.

As I look at them, I wish for a 3 inch version that is slightly smaller in all dimensions. I think it would be very similar to the Sage profile.

I’m a newcomer here. I did a search and found threads over a decade old saying Eric was working on a mini manix. I’m really just wondering if it has been completely ruled out? Maybe it’s not possible to shrink the CBB down more?

No matter what you name it, I’d love to have a Sage / mini manix with CBB lock.

Yep, there's quite a few threads and discussions over the years about this. Always a good thing to bump this discussion up. Like the Para3, we really need a Manix 3.

Pretty please?

the old threads referring to the mini manix might be the manix 2. i know vivi calls the manix 2 a mini manix.

i've not held a sage yet, but i'd really like to try one. the sage 5 seems like a slightly smaller manix with a comp lock to me as well.

I call it a mini-manix because that's what Spyderco called it :rofl

I think a CBBL Sage would be pretty close to what I've coined the mini-mini-manix people ask for. I don't know how hard those bolt lock Sages are to find, but if I were in the market for this hypothetical folder, I'd try to hunt one of those down and see if it can fill this niche.

Either way I wouldn't be surprised if we see Eric design a mini-mini-manix someday. That size is very popular for Spyderco.

Sage 6 would be perfect. They have not done the CBBL in the Sage although the 3 is close. It is an in-house lock and it keeps the purpose of the Sage lineup going forward. People who want a smaller version (though the Manix 2 can feel like a smaller knife when choked up) can opt for the Sage 6. Seems like a no brainer. I would bet that has been discussed.

For me a CBBL Sage 6 would make more sense than a Mini-Manix - if the latter would keep the typical Manix-handle shape:

- I think if the Manix handle got any shorter (while keeping its general shape), many hands would not fit anymore behind the choil, the pronounced "rear guard" / "beak" at the handle end would prevent that.
- While the rather flat handle end of the Sage actually makes for a grip area as long as possible....

And if a Mini-Manix got a flat handle end instead of that "beak": Well, it would be pretty much a Sage 6 anyway...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):

-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I agree that a "micro" manix could not just be a scaled down version of the manix handle. The dramatic shape works well at that size, but would not translate well if shrunk. It would really have to morph into the sage handle.

I really like the sage. The spear point is less "pointy" and I find it to be optimal. There is no question a Sage version with CBB would be my dominant EDC.

I would prefer the manix name if it would mean made in Colorado.

Maybe there has not been enough interest? It seems like an obvious niche to me. Just wondered if there were technical reasons sighted before. Not hearing any so - keep the hope alive?

CBBL Sage would be real close to the Sage 3. Like the Sage 3, a CBBL Sage would probably be a little taller than the other Sage models to make room for the lock. Personally, I think I'd rather have the bolt-action lock but I certainly wouldn't pass on a CBBL. Just be prepared to read all the complaints that the spring's too stiff

I realize that the cbbl is Spyderco’s so it makes sense but the bolt action lock in the sage3 was basically the same in use. If a cbbl Sage6 is just as nice it will be a winner. I’ll probably stick with the sage3 myself.

Wish I could find a Sage 3 then......

I've never handled one but based on the comments, sound like it would be great for me. I guess I'm just late to the party.

Sincere thanks for the suggestion, but I agree that that’s definitely not what I mean.

Although, I have more spydies than most Spyderco customers, I’ll admit that I’m pretty picky about what I buy. I have considered the P’kal, but that blade shape/angle coupled with the price make it quite unappealing. I’d gladly try one, but wouldn’t risk buying one.

I guess, if there were a discontinued bargain bin or factory second for cheap opportunity I might buy one, but that’ll likely never happen.

The Caly 3, along with the Sage, is another shrunken-Manix contender...if a CBBL could be squeezed into it.

I'd love a Manix 3. CBBL in a Native (or better Chaparral) sized package would be awesome. I know in the past Sal has said there is a substantial engineering difficulty in packing the CBBL into a package that small, though.

I wonder why this is, technically seen.

- To me (admittedly not an engineer at all!) it seems as if it should be possible to shrink the CBBL as a whole - so make each single component let´s say 10 or 15 % smaller (the tabs for operation could actually keep the size they have in the current CBBL).
- The (current) CBBL is really strong from all I know, so a "Lil CBBL" should still be strong enough - even more so, since it would be implemented only in small folders anyway (less leverage, by tendency less "hard use"....)
- Sure, a 10% smaller CBBL would probably be a bit more fiddly to assemble/produce, but I can´t see how this could be a real issue for Spyderco

Perhaps though it would be a cost issue - having to produce each component of the CBBL not in just one, but in two sizes - ?

On the other hand: Many seem to love Benchmades Axxis lock (I personally don´t, tbh) - so if a shrunken CBBL also got an a bit lighter spring (which I personally would NOT like, but probably "the market"), it would have the potential to become a success - ?
