Looks great.

In the delivered and up and coming thread people were asking about how light/dark the etch is. To keep that thread on topic I'll post this here.

This is my 40th Anniversary. I have it angled in the light just right for maximum effect, this is as dark as the etch ever looks. Interestingly if you look at the swedge, in the angle of the light hitting that part of the blade you can barely see any pattern at all.

Image

It's also worth noting as it moves through the light the part of the pattern that appears dark and the part that appears light will switch.

You should always carry a good flashlight (everybody should) and memorize the angles when the pattern sticks out like that, and show it off at least 25 times per day. It is gorgeous...

Yeah, $280 is ok for that knife.

It looks great.

Yes it looks great, even the scales look nice in this vid.

Still, $280 is really really painful... for a rather small knife, with "just" G10 scales. I am SO struggling. I want a Damasteel Spydie, but I think it's crazy to spend this much on such a small knife. Oh the struggle......

This is my dream knife. Right now, the exchange rate is so bad this knife would cost me over $1200!
Sigh.

Is that USD? Why does the price go up like that for you?

I get you, but I think you have options.

1. Suck it up, pay the man, and don't hate yourself forever, regretting what you should have done.

2. Take your chances, and get right on Sal's case about doing the DAMAUKPK ASAFP from Golden.

3. Sell a kidney and go buy the next BM Gold Class that comes out.

4. Do nothing, and trawl eBay for one at whatever the vulture that is selling it dictates is a fair price. (See 3.)

Your move.

Can you explain what you mean? If it is 280 US dollars and you exchange it to another currency the new figure is no longer US dollars. Perhaps1200 of your currency?

Not sure if this is the actual problem but it could be this.

As I understand it banks etc. charge to exchange currency. If for some reason they charged you $3.28US for every $1US worth of currency 'x' you wanted to exchange for US Dollars... Exchaning $280 worth of currency 'x' would cost you $920 in exchange fees. So $280 for the knife + $920 for the exchange = $1200

That would be a lousy exchange rate.

Exchange rates are why your Spyderco knives are getting more expensive. One currency is stronger than another and if you exchange into the weaker currency then things become more expensive. For example, if you buy a $100 Spyderco in Canada it will cost $120.

Why would anyone expect foreign currency to have parity with the U.S. Dollar. That makes no sense. It's like people in Australia complaining about products costing more (in Australian Dollars) compared to U.S. pricing (in U.S. dollars)... All while failing to mention the average full-time salary in the U.S.A. is ~$50,000 USD, while the average full-time salary in Australia is ~$75,000 AUD. If you're getting paid 50% more in AUD compared to your U.S.A. counterparts being paid in USD, you can expect products in Australia to cost roughly 50% more AUD then the same product in the U.S.A. priced in USD.

USD ≠ AUD.

Obviously I understand currencies in different countries vary. Maybe my question was unclear.

I presume Doc Dan to live in America, as he has a US flag as his Picture, and his signature mentions the White House.

Doc Dan then mentions he has to pay over $1200 for a knife that is due to sell in the US for $280.

Again, I presume he is using the term $ to mean US dollars.
I mean, if you live in Zimbabwe, the knife is over $100,000, but you would say Z$100,000, to avoid confusion.

So my question is, which of my presumptions are incorrect? Or what am I missing here?

I am equally confused, around this $1,200 price that is referred to.

That wasn't directed towards you (or anyone on the forum really). It just a somewhat common complaint I see, and I've never really understood it. I thought maybe I was missing something obvious.

Thought I'd post another comparison of my 40th Anniversary in different lighting.

First pic best angle darkest looking pattern. Second pic worst angle, lightest pattern. Third pic middle ground.

It's much cooler in person when you can see the colors shift. See how the light and dark patterns are reversed on the last two pics?

Sorry for the confusion. Most of the long timers know me. I live in Southeast Asia. I am an American expat. I was kidnapped (got married) and then got a job teaching at the university, here. That's why the exchange rate.
