Any update to the Maxamet one? I guess I could get a pinned one and just use compressed air and oil to keep the pivot rust free
So far the retailers I have checked (with Maxamet in stock, fresh or stale) all confirmed that they are still pinned... I would really love to have a go with Maxamet when I can take good care of it, esp the lock interface

based on what sal has said repeatedly about dealing with maxamet, i'm not sure we'll see it much more. i'm honestly kind of surprised it hasn't been discontinued.

I personally cannot wait for the release of the non pinned version. Im such a fan of the Manix 2 XL that I will probably end up getting a few of this LW Manix 2 as well. Also seems like there's a lot one can mod if one wants to. So that is great news as well.

Still patiently waiting for that Manix2 LW Magnacut. Converted all three of these recently.

I was nervous at first as well, but it’s not bad to do the conversion if you’re careful:
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/man ... t-20547888
Keep in mind that I’m not the only one who posted how I did it. There are a couple of other tutorials on BF.

The hardware I used is this:
https://usaknifemaker.com/pivot-barrel- ... bh-ss.html
4F119943-133C-4321-839D-C6672C6E41DC.png
Since doing my conversion, I wanted less tall screw heads than the T8 clip screws I used, but I found that the 2-56x1/4” T6 screws were too long. I filed/sanded them down to something <3/16” to allow them to tighten properly. Now, the screw heads are much closer to flush with the FRCP, about how the original rivet heads were, but I now need 2 torx drivers for disassembly.
Have: old S30V Native, HAP40 Endura, ZDP DF2, S110V Manix LW, Cru-wear Para 3, SE H1 DF2, S90V Native 5, K390 Urban, SE Pac Salt, P.I.T.S., XHP Manix LW, SB Caly 3, B70P, PMA11, K03, Kapara, REX 45 Military, 154CM Manix LW, Swick, AEB-L Urban, KC Cruwear Manix, M390 PM2, Mantra 2, CruCarta Shaman, M390 Manix, K390 Police 4, S90V Manix LW, Rex 45 Manix LW, 20CV Manix, Rex 45 Lil’Native, Shaman, C208GP, Cruwear Manix, Cruwear Manix, M4 Chief, Z-max!!!

i'm a longtime proponent of the m2lw and i've been waiting a long time for spyderco to change the pins to screws. after finally getting a g10 manix and customizing it though, i'm far less likely to buy more of the lw version. i enjoy the ability to customize the g10 version and the action is a lot better. i still like the lw and will absolutely be getting the magnacut m2lw salt when it's released, whether it is pinned or not, but i'd still prefer the magnacut and spy27 versions to be released in g10.

I would guess that statistically the G10 Manixes have "better" action (like in more "drop shutty") than the FRCP versions indeed - but I figure just by tendency, not as a "rule" - ?

At least I can recall one or two comparisons done by folks who had an LW and a G10 Manix, and a pro of the LW they pointed out was actually the smoother action of the LW - and two of the three Manix LW I owned / own have perfect action..

This is not a "fanboyish" defence of the LW by any means - I just think that there are a lot of pieces out there with perfect action too (though I personally would not need a totally free falling action on a Manix -. or even prefer an a bit "stiffer" one. This is probably due to the ways I usually close a CBBL: Either by pulling the locktab just with the thumb and guide the blade to close with the index finger in the opening hole, or let the choil drop on my middle finger with a little wrist flick (like people do with a backlock (but then on the index finger))
I don't have a great sample size to go from, but I have a screw version LW (all black BD1N) and a G10 version (Rex 45) and the action on the LW is noticeably better. The exact opposite of my Para 3 experience. It's funny to see others have the same experience.

Just ordered a couple Manix 2 LWTs BD1N versions a couple weeks ago from DLT trading and they are screw construction, I absolutely love them so far, like everyone else is saying I can’t wait until all the other steels become screw construction.

I'm guessing that past MxLWs that were pinned and now out of production, will never be seen in screw construction? I can't imagine Spyderco going back and re-issuing previous-but-no-longer-avail pinned MxLWs in screw construction.

Yeah, much as I'd like a Maxamet LW, I'd definitely want screw construction for that.

The thing that keeps me from attempting a screw changeover (aside from time) is the fear of rivets spinning and melting the FRCP. As well as other unforeseen mistakes I'm prone to make.

Clearly, you've been down this road before. Yeah, rivets can spin. Luckily, the alignment of the parts isn't dependent on the rivets. But your'e right--if you don't have a good reason to do otherwise, leave the knife intact.

LOL, so true. I actually prefer pinned for a backpacking knife. One less thing--well, several fewer things-- to get loose, get lost, or go wrong while in the back-country.

I'm not so sure this will happen. Has this request ever been made for other models?

There are some of us who wouldn’t mind some pinned models.

We are decidedly in the minority.

Yes, over on Bladeforums I posted how I converted my Manix's to screw conversion with custom stainless steel washers on my lathe.

Yes, some of the Japanese models where aesthetically superior when pinned.

But, as someone else mentioned prior, these LWs are riveted and not pinned.

The difference being...? A rivet has more of a mushroomed head than a pin?

I took the plunge and did my SPY 27 LW. Not going to lie, I love tinkering, but this was a pain in the ***. Not sure how people can do it without a drill press. Started with a Dremmel and took out a chunk of scale doing the rivet near the pivot before a switched to the drill press. Went much better but still wasn't an easy process. Happy it's all done now, well, this knife at least. I have a Maxamet on deck that hopefully will go smoother.

As you can see in one of the disassembled pictures, the action was a mess on the inside. Very happy they're switching to screwed construction for the Lightweight. Should have been that way from the start in my opinion.

Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out, outside of a few chunks out of the FRCP. Fingers crossed for the Maxamet.
