Native 5 salt is Magnacut?
Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?
Yes indeed - we should NOT judge the day before the evening. The SE Ayoob has also a rather ... robust ... grind, yet it performs really way as it comes out of the box.

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?
I'm going to guess and say mine just came from the first batch that came off the wheel? It has been said that serration geometry changes over time as the grinding wheel wears, maybe mine is just from the first batch when the wheel was at max size/radius.

I think the primary grind on the MagnaCut Native is more acute than the LC200N. Since the earlier photo I sharpened the tip on the MC blade to 15 degrees like I have it on the LC200N blade and you can see how much wider the bevel is on it vs. the LC. The serrations as is on the MC are actually more obtuse than the LC as 15 degrees on the SM hits the shoulder whereas the entire LC blade has been sharpened to 15 degrees.
Has anyone measured the blade width with a caliper in various areas for comparison?
Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?
15% would also be my ballpark guess for the proportion of serrated produced; that's close to the proportion of serrated edges that forumites report owning.

I shouldn’t question Buddafucco’s updates — it’s a Magnacut Native. I might already be done with knife purchases this year.sethwm wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 11:33 amPlease post back with what you receivedHopsbreath wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 11:30 amI also find it odd that all of them would miss the chance to hype the first Spyderco folder in the most anticipated steel. That said, I have one on order.

I don't have one in LC200N but here are my measurements, measures at the top of each of the serrations at the arrows. This is the factory thickness for this knife, I haven't done any reprofiling or sharpening that effected the bevel at the very top.

Does anyone know what the hardness is? I know there are other factors in performance I was just curious to find out what they landed at.

I'd like to know this too, if for no other reason than to know how it differs from the mule, which I also use quite a bit. From sharpening it really doesn't seem much different to me, still easy to grind and takes an amazing edge with little effort.

Cool, thanks. Just as a side note - I have just measured my Ayoob and get pretty much the same values (around 0.04" - 0-043"). So in this regards I would find the Native a bit on the thick (or shall I rather say 'strong and robust') side, but nevertheless very capable (as the Ayoob definitely is). My Ayoob was not sharpened yet (thought the time has come).

Well this still only shows the blade thickness at that point in the blade grind, and really should only be compared to the same model/edge type knife. Underneath that point could be a bevel that's 10 degrees and nearly a half inch long or it could be 90 degrees and practically blunt. The Ayoob serrations are for sure ground at a much higher angle, they just happen to be around the same thickness at the top of the serrations.

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?
Amen to that. You are absolutely right of course. I did not try to calculate the angle of the serration grind. But since both of the blades in question have pretty wide serrations of (just a visual impression) comparable width, they are going to be more comparable. Now the blade on the Ayoob is a hair thinner, but the Native has a FFG, so the angle of the primary grid is quite different.Evil D wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 5:25 amWell this still only shows the blade thickness at that point in the blade grind, and really should only be compared to the same model/edge type knife. I measured mine and got from tip to heel .035, .033, .033.Evil D wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 5:25 amMatus wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 4:42 amCool, thanks. I also measured to the bottom of the Spydie hole right against the plunge and got .069 on both the MagnaCut and the LC200N so that kills my guess that the primary grind is different on the 2 models.

Sounds like mine is just ground a wee bit higher or at a couple degrees lower. I'm definitely not mad about it, if anything kinda let down that it wasn't deliberate.
