Clad K390
Clad K390
I love my K390 Endela. I do worry about getting water behind the scales that I cannot wipe off. Is there any interest in a Cladded K390 from Seki? Is this even possible with K390? I am thinking of Hap40/SUS 410. I like the the idea of the wear on the blade from the softer steel and have been wanting a clad knife. If I had my preferences, K390 would be the center steel. I like Patina but worry about rust.

Re: Clad K390
The tricky part is finding a cladding steel with a similar heat-treatment to the core steel. Or at least the ability to survive the core steel's treatmant. I don't know enough to even suggest what steel that would be for K390.
Re: Clad K390
Got it. I did not know that. I assumed they were different due to SUS/410 being so soft and Hap 40 being harder, but that was an assumption on my part.

Re: Clad K390
Ha! I may have used the wrong terminology. I was thinking of laminated steel or steel cladding, but DLC would be another option. I personally favor uncoated satin steel. Something about seeing the metal I like. However, DLC may help prevent some rust, but I know that is a hot topic previously discussed.

Re: Clad K390
Some like cladding and some don't. I recall seeing a bunch of threads about preferring non cladded. I prefer non cladded even with rusty steels. I will still buy cladded if that is my only option though.
Re: Clad K390
That is not quite correct. Most sanmai blades are clad with either more-less pure iron (many kitchen knives), or some austenitic stainless steel. And the milder the HT (especially quench), the less likely are issues with delamination. And steels like k390 are most likely quenched just by cooling air or between metal plates. So a rather slow, non-violent quench compared to simple carbon steels.yablanowitz wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 12:46 pmThe tricky part is finding a cladding steel with a similar heat-treatment to the core steel. Re: Clad K390
I was also considering the Caly with ZDP-189 as the center. Seems like if that can be cladded, maybe K390 could.

There is stainless clad Rex121 out there. k390 will be just fine :)

Re: Clad K390
Stonewashing it might help a bit ^^.
I think cladding would be cool ! I don't like coatings, and they often are not fully impermeable.

In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Re: Clad K390
I like cladding over something like DLC. I always wonder how the DLC will hold up over time around the washers. The 1 place not easily inspected.

Re: Clad K390
I’ve had my K390 Pm2 & Para 3 two years now with no patina.
My K390 Dragonfly had some light spotting from the factory. My K390 Stretch looks darker in certain lights.

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Clad K390 would add strength AND get rid of most of the corrosion issue. Sign me up.

Re: Clad K390
The other day, I’m pretty sure I saw a clad Rex121 fixed blade. It made me think of Sal’s comments about grinding such hard steels in production. I thought to myself that cladding rex121 or, in this case, possibly k390 could be a good solution. Then I realized that clad steels have their own challenges too.
rex121 is the king of steel, but nature’s teeth have been cutting for hundreds of millions of years and counting
Re: Clad K390
I believe the Seki-City models with clad blades are only steels from the Japanese kitchen knife industry. There is just not enough volume to make a special run of K390 with clad layers to justify the cost.
If the Japanese kitchen knives have enough demand in the future we may see availability. At present, I am not aware of K390 used for kitchen knives.

FK
