Native Chief CTS-XHP on the fence

Post by Manixguy@1994 »

I’m looking at this Chief hard . What are your thoughts of this steel ? Do I really need to be concerned of corrosion issues , or just do my usual maintenance keeping clean and waxed ? Thank you MG2

Are you talking coated or uncoated?

I have an uncoated bunch (Manix2, Techno2, and several Chaps). Not a hint of oxidation in New England’s hot and humid summers. I do put away my knives dry.

I’ve had a few Chiefs and the Cutlery Shoppe exclusive was the one I kept; it’s absolutely cherry. I did get the coated one but that’s just because I like the orange and black combo — matches my Junglas. XHP is really nice steel, a favorite of mine.

Just get it. If you don’t have an issue with s30v you won’t have a problem with XHP.

Interested myself. Was hoping there would be a black friday cyber monday holiday special opportunity. I didn't see one; or I missed it.

You will love it. I’ve been very impressed with XHP. I have the Chief with DLC blade and orange scales. For me, the XHP performs better than I had expected. I clipped a T-post with mine while cutting twine out of our tomato rows this year. I hit the edge pretty hard. Hard enough that I just cringed. Didn’t even really want to look at it. When I did, there was no visible damage. No chip, no roll. I couldn’t believe it. I realize it isn’t the toughest steel so maybe I got lucky. Either way, I was already impressed with the steel at that point but that moment was when it exceeded my expectations. I’m also happy with the way it sharpens. It’s relatively easy to bring the sharpness up to hair-whittling if you do your part. After extensive use, I don’t think it has nearly the edge retention of my K390 knives but I didn’t expect it to. I’m ok with the decent amount of edge retention it has. It might be in my head, but I feel the edge retention is noticeably better than S30V.

I haven't had corrosion issues with XHP even though I live in a place with a nine month long wet season. As stated above, drying it off after use is important.

i had a spot show up on my xhp manix, but i was able to wipe it off easily. the spot was on the part of the blade that you can barely see in the cbbl cutout, so something had made it in there and not been cleaned. haven't had any issues since and have never had any issues on the exposed blade. i agree that it's almost as good as s30v and, if you treat it similarly, you'll be good to go.

CTS-XHP has a considerably higher chromium content than S30V; I would have thought that its corrosion resistance would very good, and certainly superior to S30V in that regard. Or does CTS-XHP’s higher carbon content somehow cancel that out?

people say it's like a stainless d2. it's stainless, but seems to be just under s30v in my experience. i've dealt with rust on both and it wiped off of both relatively easily.

Jim
The high carbon content causes a lot of the chromium to be tied up in chromium carbides. That contributes to wear resistance, but not corrosion resistance.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have read Larrin’s take on the steel which was very interesting some time ago . After reading it I found myself conflicted especially while reading up on Magnacut and seeing the test plates . I do have only a few non stainless knives one is Randall 20 in O-1 which I have had since early 80’s and have used it in all sorts of weather conditions hunting, but it’s not a daily user . D2 does not bother me either . I’m going to mull this over tonight , I’m leaning on ordering , the Native Chief is really my type of knife in many respects . Getting on hands comments in real world conditions makes a big difference , thank you all . Regards MG2

if it helps set your mind at ease, here are a couple shots of my xhp manix getting wet. the first is in the rain and the second is under a waterfall, both in hawaii.

despite my one little spot that rubbed off, i've not had any issues. it was my most carried edc when i lived in hawaii, along with my pacific salt.

after the waterfall pic, the manix actually fell about five feet into the pool under the falls. i thought it was gone forever, but God sent a little ray of light to reflect off the blade just long enough for me to grab it. no rust.

I carried several Cold Steel knives in CTS-XHP for quite a while with no problems. I have the Native Chief XHP versions, but have not carried them. I've carried my S90V Native Chief since the day I received it. Native Chiefs are awesome knives.

It is difficult to design a top flight self defence knife. The Native Chief series ranks very high up there to me.

That Manix2 is a beauty! Really like those scales . Found one on eBay , the price was scary . Just curious what were you doing behind the waterfall ? Biology project maybe ?
