911rsr, I love the K390. I haven't really used the K390 DF2 but my K390 Endela is the knife I carry every day along with my ZDP DF2. In some ways I like K390 better than ZDP. But, to be fair, it may be because,so far, the K390's have had better factory edges that just needed touching up on the brown sharpmaker stones. The ZDP's I've gotten needed to be reprofiled to get a 15 DPS edges on both sides of the blade. I just got a Stretch 2 in ZDP and one side had a 15 DPS edge and the other was 20. I was tempted to just put a 20 degree micro bevel on the 15 DPS side but instead reprofiled the 20 DPS side to 15. If I hadn't just received some diamond sharpmaker rods, I would have gone with the micro bevel. But, once properly profiled, I think both steels benefit from a weekly touch up on the rods. Maybe 5 strokes per side keeps things fresh and sharp.

I feel the difficulty sharpening zdp 189 is way overblown, I'd say it's more about technique and stones than it is about a particular feature of the steel.

Perhaps the steel is hard enough that the poor practices that work for 420 HC are not as effective for a steel like ZDP 189.

There can also be some bias here with everybody saying it's difficult to sharpen you can definitely psych yourself out.

ZDP 189 is not difficult to sharpen.

ZDP is awesome and I would certainly own more. I love my Endura in it. Honestly the more you sharpen and get past the factory grind and smooth out the bevel it just gets better and better. That said, you could cut for a LONG time before really needing to resharpen.

That apex must be close to non-existant, width-wise ! I've always managed to get my edges to cut nicely, but not everytime to catch hair, and never that easy. I think that once I've raised a consistent burr, I mess up something in the next steps, hurting the performance of the final edge.
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

I have had good luck hand sharpening with DMT diamond plates and several strops in varying compound grit to .5 micron. I seem to do better with firm pressure and constantly flipping sides.
