Slight corrosion on old salt blade

#1

Post by Thunderpants »

Amazingly, some dude in Israel found this old crusader sword In the sea! Since it's 900 years old it's unlikely to be a Spyderco but I thought I'd share my astonishment nonetheless. I'm trying to imagine how an old fairly primitive sword would survive a year submerged in salty water, let alone 900 years!

Held together by the barnacles. Interested to see if there is still a sword inside there.

Same here - but in the article it says (quote) "The sword...will be put on display after it has been cleaned and restored"
So they are positive that there actually will still be a recognicable weapon inside...

/ Generally: Really amazing!

I am actually quite interested in medieval weapons and know a thing or two (not a real expert though).
And while the swords of that time were often times actually a lot better, sharper, lighter and more durable than some might think (there was quite some variance concerning steel quality though), one thing they were NOT is rustproof. Almost can´t believe that one could survive in salt water... perhaps it was buried in some kind of clay or whatever, more or less isolated from the water, most of the time?!
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Yes, I think it had to be in some kind of unusual environment to avoid instant rusting and decomposition. I was at one of the old crusader forts in Malta which had been upgraded with metal gun emplacements maybe 100 years ago and all the massive iron fittings were crumbling away like sand. (The fort where they shot some of Gladiator, by the way.)

I’d be curious about the steel’s composition. Was there any chromium mixed in and how much? While obviously not H1, some element of rust resistance must exist to have survived such a corrosive environment for so long.

Now I know where I lost my sword! I wondered.

How about this one?

 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45753455

Jim
I recall that one, very cool!!
Twice as long in the water than the crusader sword, but at least not in salt wster.
Still I am almost certain that the swedish sword too must have been buried in dense clay or the like for the longest time, more or less isolated from the water.

am i the only one that thinks he should've left it alone? at this point, it's been reclaimed by the earth and it's clearly a habitat. just leave it alone and let the sea life flourish. i'm pretty sure we don't need more swords for museums.
