Which Manix next?

#1

Post by Geo-Ozeki »

I have just snapped the blade on my Manix LW in S110V. Totally my fault. Lazy fire making and i broke it. I loved that knife but need a replacement.

The Manix has become my favourite knife and is my home edc for all tasks. So what version should I get next?

It will get (ab)used in home renovations general garden prodding… and fire making. I have a para3 in SPY27 & like it but are there any new Manix in fancy steels coming soon I should wait for and just buy a Sage for now? Should I just buy another in S110V or BD1N (great edc steel for me) and save up for a Shaman?

ps anyone know what happens to a rit dyed lw Manix in translucent blue? Does it become opaque?

i'm hoping for a g10 manix in spy27, personally, but i'll be getting one in s30v soon. sounds like a tool steel might do you some good if you don't need corrosion resistance. if you want to stick with the lw and you like bd1n and spy27, either should suit you well. i don't think the frcp takes due as well as frn from what i've read, but i haven't tried it myself.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Yes, G10 in SPY27 would be amazing.

Looking online there are fewer (European) choices than I thought.

I'd seriously consider the BD1N M2 LW. I am considering one as a more stainless compliment to my Rex45 and Maxamet variants.

My suggestion too, love my REX 45 Manix LW.

In this steel the LW did not sell as well as the G10 version as far as I recall. So not that popular, does pop up on eBay not to seldom.

Of course for a higher price, I think the last one I saw there was like 190 USD.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

If you wanna keep with the Manix, and keep doing "stupid" stuff with it, I'd go with the toughest possible !

Isn't it the 52100 one? Would be pretty hard to find however...
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

At this point, I'd be patient and wait to see what's down the pipeline. It's been a bit since we've had a Manix released and something tells me it will likely be a nice sprint/exclusive! I wouldn't touch those secondary market prices on any of the previous releases.

My first Spyderco was a Manix 2 LW CTS BD1N. It’s been in my pocket at work for a good month now, which is a long time as I usually rotate weekly. Love that knife.

Yes, I had one and gave it to my friend as I had got the S110V version. The BD1N version is more expensive now (in Europe) and so the S110V is looking good value.

Vivi - have got a Manix XL and love it 😍

Why not get an SPY-27 version. Great color on the FRCP on that one.

Where I am looking (Heinnie) the SPY27 is £20 more than S110V. I think it is likely the S110V is a price for older stock and it will rise when they restock. I think S110V is ‘better’ than SPY27 so was thinking it would be an odd choice financially?

Also I now don’t have any S110V in my collection and I have no problem keeping it sharp with my sharp maker.

Starting to look like a replacement Manix LW in S110V is hard to beat!

Generally I am totally with you here.
Big part being that it hurts how I see the knife community when people sell knives for more than they paid for themselves.

But if I could put that aside: Just in principle I think a slightly used G10 REX45 Manix or a brand new FRCP REX 45 Manix for 185 USD (can both be found for that money) are still worth that price, they are that good...

To be honest: If I ever lost my REX45 Manix LW I would strongly consider to pay a secondary market price just to get a replacement. Just cause I like that knife and that steel so much.

I stopped buying second hand knives a while ago. I limit my knife addiction by only buying new Spydercos and try to get knives that I will use/ can justify a task for.

S110V seems like it is hard to beat in the current or potential coming choices. If they bring out a magnacut I would love that but that could still be a while.

Of course, S110V and Magnacut are headed toward opposite ends on the edge retention--toughness spectrum, so those two steels hardly belong in the same sentence...

Just completed a trade with a gentleman in California for his Cru-wear Manix, came in yesterday afternoon, I think I just may be in love? (could be that new knife honeymoon) Been wanting a tool steel Manix for a couple of months now, this one is going to be great!
