Endura 4 ZDP-189

#1

Post by Ramonade »

I was gonna order my first knife from the Delica-Endela-Endura family in VG-10 when i noticed there was one Endura 4 ZDP-189 left in stock at my dealer.

Does someone have experience with ZDP-189 here? Is it worth the $30 markup at my dealer?

Yes, I have one and definitely feel it is worth $30 more than the VG-10. I'd carry it if I weren't limited to a 3.5" blade. Besides, they won't be found anymore making it a soon to be scarce model. I'm trolling the interwebs right now looking for a ZDP Stretch 2 that I decided I have to have!

Ordered. Always wanted to try ZDP-189, and the Endura (might be a bit long but eh, more knife is more knife).
I received my first Griptillian today (sheepsfoot), and immediately decided to return it, I'm decidely not made for the ergos and grinds of some brands... At least i'll have just a bit to put out to get that sweet endura 4.

@z1r there was one at my dealer up till a month ago, I should have ordered it, the Stretch 2 looks like a better (for me) Manix 2 !

EDIT: they still have it, certainly a return? I don't see how they would get more XD but it's another 40€ more, it's starts to stack up. 178€ must be like $200

Congrats, you will love both the knife and the steel!

I'm planning a wild pig hunt this winter and even though I carry a fixed blade skinning knife, it dulls quickly after skinning a couple of pigs and having a stretch in ZDP would be the ultimate backup knife.

The ZDP Stretch 1s are hard to find, I know.
Not so the HAP40 ones. Different steel of course, but no slouch too...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):

Is the HAP40 one available anywhere except BentoBoxShop which does not ship overseas?

Personally, I'll take VG-10 over ZDP-189 any day. ZDP-189 definitely holds an edge longer than VG-10, but then takes longer to sharpen and is also less rust and stain resistant than VG-10 so I don't see any real advantage to it.

I have an endura zdp and really like it. Recommended. Some will argue that there's better steel out there now but it sharpens without needing diamonds and holds an edge for a long time. If k390 is a Ferrari then zdp is a 350z. Maybe not as fast but still rips!

I have to respectfully disagree. I won't argue that VG-10 is more rust resistant, but ZDP isn't exactly easy to rust. I use my ZDP DF2 for cutting fruit all the time. When I'm done, I clean the blade and no discoloration yet. Not sure VG-10 is exactly easier to sharpen, but it sure is easier to reprofile. That said, once proper edge profile is achieved, regular maintenance keeps it slicey sharp for a good bit longer in my experience.

I’ve had two Endura models in this steel and never encountered any issues as long as I did my part in maintenance. Still have a Stretch CF in ZDP189 and it still is one of my very favorite knives from Spyderco. I would check around Z1R they are available. Either model in this steel is a great addition to a collection and or use . MG2

I like ZDP a lot, it reminds me some of XHP, one of my favorite steels ever. I have the Delica and Stretch 2 in ZDP.. both have been on hunting trips in Alaskan rain forest and emerged rust-free and still sharp enough to dress more bucks. Buy with confidence.

I didn't find out / realize that they made the ZDP Endura in FFG and a Saber Grind. Do they still make them both?

I’ve been wanting an endura in zdp for a while and all this talk of it becoming discontinued finally made me place an order.

I have 28 Spyderco knives (growing by the month) and the Endura is my long time favorite. My FFG ZDP189 Endura is absolutely superb!

In fact if I could only have 1 edc knife for the rest of my life it would be my green FFG ZDP189 Endura.

Buy it!

Don't think so, BBS seems to be the only one still offering HAP40 Spydies (not only the Stretch), I got my HAP40 Stretch from them.

They do pop up on eBay though occasionally, that's where I got my HAP40 Endura for a decent price.

As for "dealer not shipping to Europe":
You could use an US forwarding service. An account there is for free, you get an US post box adress where a dealer can ship items to, and they'll forward it to you for rather low cost (of course you have to consider taxes/tariffs of your home country too).

There are several such services, I've used "myus.com" in the past Worked just fine, but forum brother Micha/Archangel (Germany) told me some time ago, that now they charge a lot more for sending knives.
I just send them a message what the current policy is concerning knives, if you like I can get back to you with that info.
