Have you scratched the primary bevel while sharpening? Do you have a horror story or picture you would be willing to share? How much do you value blade aesthetics vs function?

I feel like most of us have been there, and many of us value symmetry and aesthetics far more than is necessary, but also that that one slip which marks the steel can be extremely frustrating...

Leather is another unforgiving medium...anyway, I'm just curious to hear y'all's experiences.

This one sparked the thought, it wasn't egregious but it was unintentional while reprofiling freehand...
Many of my knives are scratched to **** towards the tip. It's from reprofiling knives on a 6" bench stone. Should bite the bullet and buy some 11" DMT's. In the mean time I've been being more careful with it.

I probably wouldn't have even noticed the one in your picture. I've scratched my knives up worse than that from simply using them:

I've scratched a few while free hand sharpening, as well as during use. Once they've been scratched, it's kind of a nice feeling knowing it's no longer pristine and allows me to use it harder than I previously would have. I also tend to reprofile these knives more aggressively as well, because at that point...why not!?

I don't mind scratches from use, but the ones caused by my mistakes irk me, LOL! I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one "drawing" on blades when I get a little too comfortable.

It's relieving when titanium handles start blending their snail trails though, those first few tend to be eyesores.

I've also scratched up the handle of a BM 940 similar to Mikey while reprofiling the base of the blade, that was soon after getting an Edge Pro and being somewhat overzealous.
So it goes.

The tenacious I learned to freehand on is scratched all up to the spine from laying it too low on the stone—I’ll post a picture when I get home. I think it’s a neat reminder of how far my sharpening has come.

Im either scratching them from dropping them or scratching them from sharpening. The trick is to scratch the non-presentation side lol

I try my best to keep scratches off of the presentation side, but Murphy’s Law usually dictates otherwise. 🙃

I also have a Squarehead that I’ve almost completely polished away the stonewash on, just from sharpening it so much.

See that big long scratch? That was done by some idiot with a Dremel. It happens. Scratches are the doorway to knife use freedom. Once it's not perfect anymore, you can finally start using it like you should.

Some examples of scratching blades near the tip when reprofiling. More careful these days. Also helps I no longer crack a beer or five when it's time to reset the bevel :rofl

I think that Police 3 is the last knife in my collection still sporting a convexed edge bevel. Used to use those a long time ago, maybe 10-12 years ago before switching back to V edges.

This is true of cars, trucks, and spouses.
