Problems with k390 Spyderco knives

#1

Post by Cutter5334 »

I have 2 Spyderco knives with the k390 blade, a Delica and a Stretch 2 LW. I am bitterly disappointed that both of these blades have uneven grinds, which I have never had on a Spyderco knife before (going all the way back to the Delica with the molded-in pocket clip). Has anybody else had this problem? Is this a typical thing now with the Seki City builds?

There was just a post recently in another thread about a police 4 lightweight k390 that looked really bad.

I have a police 4 lightweight k390 and a pm2 k390, both are fine. At least to my naked eye anyways.

Are you talking about blade grind or edge grind? Because both were great on my sample size of one, a ladybug.

Same here. Police 4 LW in K390 and a PM2 in K390 from BBS.

Gave a friend of mine a Police 4 LW in K390 before I got myself one. They were/are both very even and the sharpening was also excellent.

The grinds on my K390 Stretch 2 look very even to me, but that's a sample size of 1, so not worth a heck of a lot. I'll just add that I own "several hundred" Spyderco knives and more than a few of them came with uneven grinds. It's my understanding that's because the finish grinding is done by hand. So, in my opinion, if these are the first two you ever received with uneven grinds, you've been darn lucky up till now.

I recently grabbed a Delica K390 and the edge grinds weren't even or symmetrical, but as I reprofile most factory edges, I never gave it a second thought. Just threw it on the Atoma 400 and went to work.

The (2) PM2s in K390 I own were perfectly symmetrical but they too were reprofiled to around 12dps.

I don't pay much attention to edge grinds as I roll my own anyway. YMMV...

My Endela and Police 4 were both pretty even. Not perfect mind you, but pretty darn good. If you have one that's way off you might consider contacting customer service.

Holding my Endela right now, the right side grind is >slightly< smaller / shallower than the left side. I wouldn't have even noticed it if I hadn't read this post! It's perfectly fine and cuts like crazy!

My Police 4's both have even blades and came with a very nice edges, but the spines were very rough and unfinished. I had to sand them down with sand paper on a flat surface for a while to make them acceptable.

My Endela has a bit of a rough spine also, but not nearly as bad as the police 4's... The Endels blade is evenly ground, but the handle scale on the right hand side moves and shifts up and down about 1/32 inch,.. its kinda annoying.

Both knives are great,.. just not perfect,.. the Police 4 rough spines is my biggest complaint.

I have a K390 Endela with even grinds. The models I own that have uneven grinds are a Stretch 2 FRN and a PM2. There could be more, but I don't pay close attention to it as it doesn't affect my use of the knife.

Completely anecdotal, but I currently own a Dragonfly, previously owned a Delica and gifted a Delica all in K390 and didn't have any grind issues with any of them.

I've had excellent luck with my two K390 Enduras and one ( maybe two ? ) Police. The steel is amazing too and very worth it for me. It's higher carbide than I usually carry around the house but these have been the exception. They are some of the best slicers I've ever used.

Hello and welcome to the forum! It would help if you could post pictures of the problem here.

I have the Endela/Endura/Police in K390 and all came with even grinds. The Police edge did come so chipped it was unusable but a quick sharpening and all was good. I chalked it up to also being crazy thin behind the edge.

I have experienced uneven grinds on other models/steels though (Hap40/ZDP/M390). It’s disappointing but I deal with it and move on. It’s more of a hassle to return it than sharpen it. And since I try not to double up on steels it’s usually a chance to sharpen something new.

Hmmmm, I have K390 from Seki, Golden, and Italy, most of it is Seki, and 1 (Para3) is from Golden, and 1 (Urban) is from Italy, and I have not seen the problems you've described.... if you could post up some pictures that would be super helpful.

Cheers,

My Endura K390 has one of the best grind from factory. Symetrical, under 15dps, 0,02" BTE. Wonderful slicer, awsome steel, very happy with it. Put a micarta scales on it and titanium Salt clip. Nonstop in my pocket for seven months.

I have a k390 Police and really love the blade geometry. That being said, the primary grind was a bit uneven and quite wavy. I am actually in the slow process of putting a hand polish on this knife (just to see if I can), and the imperfections in the grind really stood out as I was flattening the blade.
