I have a bazillion "bounce" messages in my inbox. I scanned for the worm and do not have it on my machine, someone is likely spoofing some of the addresses. My apologies to you who got bogus emails from my scarysharp account.

well, had 24 new, and then it stopped as it filled my email to 125% max... 5.0mb on a 4.0mb email account.

and only on the email I have listed on my profile for this forum... the BFC one didn't get any, nor did my isp email(with a 30mb box. would be a bit*h to clear).

I got the patch from microsoft, going to update my virus def'n and scan again tonight, as friday's scan came up clear. Just going to make sure I'm clear.

new email listed on my profile now, just going to see what that does. might be like last years where it took the emails on this forum and hit them all. as soon as you broke it up(ie vampyrewolf at yahoo.com) they stopped. new email in here from softhome.net, will change back to my spydienut yahoo account if it doesn't fix anything.

edit: ey... 3.8mb of new def'n... gotta love t2 lines.

I contacted my ISP for my domain to try and track down the offending spoofer. Here was their reply, not much we can do to track them down but FYI...

(Support Staff)
-----------------------------------------------

Hello,

It is possible for a person to connect to a server which has open email
relay to send emails from them from any email address. For example I can connect
to an Open email relaying server and can send email from president@usa.com.
The account or domain may or may not be in existence.

We are helpless in this case because all we can do is configure our servers as closed email relays. But any one can send email from a bogus
account ( Even if the domain or account may not exists) by connecting to the an
Open email relay server. It's not always a virus that causes you to receive an
email from someone who didn't actually send it however. There are plenty of
people with far too much time on their hands sending emails out to people and
spoofing the return address. Why do they do this you ask? There are many
possible reasons. Some of them are simply trying to cause trouble. Some people
would like to discredit the person being spoofed by sending some truly vile
message to the recipient, an insult to the boss perhaps. It's the same mentality
you see in people who knock on your front door and then run before you can
answer it.

We have set our server as closed relays and our servers requests for
authentication before sending mails. Only valid users can send emails via our
server. But in the case the email is not relayed from our servers but from any
other open mail servers we are helpless. There is really no way to prevent
sending/receiving a spoofed email. If you get an odd-looking email from someone,
there are ways of telling if it is fake. The simplest way would be to simply
reply to it and ask for clarification. If that is not an option, you could look
at the headers to see where the email originated from.

Regards,

2 questions
1. who would be stupid enough to send spam to knife lovers?
2. does this happen on the gun forums?

This is not a person sending out emails to forum members. All it takes is for the virus to get into one computer where it scans for email addresses which it then copies and sends out using the scanned email addresses as the return address. The owner of the infected computer may not even know this is happening. So if you get email from a forum member it does not mean they sent it, just that their address was forged. Just like a bad check. Spyderwa

I think it's dying down. I have had numerous intrusions (75-100 related to the forum). I'm not as computer smart as many of you guys but I hope this is no longer fun for sombody's worm. My usual e-mail including spam is 15-20 a day.

Not fun any more. This is a friendly place.

Yup...It looks like the worst of it is over (for now), as when I checked my Hotmail account this morning, there was just the usual 7-8 emails, and none of them were the virus-type.

Still have over 150 left Unfortunately I can't just view the title and delete the message, like there is at hotmail or yahoo. I wrote to the mailbox providers and asked them to delete all the messages but no sign so far
Therefore, if anyone wants to write me please try dialex(at)xnet(dot)ro. The words in brackets are the corresponding signs, just in case there's still a bot lurking out there.

Ceya~
Not to worry. Your order was processed and made ready for shipment on 08/16/2003. If I remember correctly it was being sent to an APO address and was to be shipped out via USPS Priority mail. Check with SFO if you want to check to make sure it was shipped. Herbst (plainedge) and a Forum Spyderhawk, right?
