Cool thread! I really don't mind spiders at all. *EXCEPT* I live in California and seem to attract Black Widows. Now, I know all about them and many of the bites of BW are harmless, but it still gimme the JIBBLIES (strong bad reference) when I see one. I must kill about 6 per year around my house. One was last week under my children's play-gym thing in the back yard. She was a big specimen and I felt bad, but I guess it's the circle of life. No habitating on my kids play stuff! You'll be happy/repulsed to know that a delica played a minor role in the elimination.

Just FYI on Black Widows;Discovery Channel had a show on the other week about stinging/biting critters. They said that alot of Widow bites don't inject venom because the fangs usually aren't long enough to pierce the skin. They also had a story about a baby that was bitten. The kid had probs until the emergency room gave him the anti-venom,and almost instantaneously he got better. The stuff works real quick.

Got a Widow story. When I was TDY to Nellis(Las Vegas) for Green Flag,we got stuck in an unused hangar at the end of the flightline(we had junky RF-4's). Me and a couple of the guys wound up going all around the hangar w/flashlights and cans of bug spray. We killed like 4 dozen of the buggers that were all around. Interesting thing was,I didn't know they came in different colors. They were all black, but their hourglass markings were not just red,but also yellow, orange, and white.

Oh,and just to creep y'all out;last spring I was walking along at night and almost got caught by a spider. I was between where the street lights shine, when all of a sudden a passing car's lights lit up a web right in front of me. It went from a tree to the sidewalk and right in the middle was this huge beastie who's body was almost as big as a quarter! I stopped just before hitting the web and was eye-to-eye w/him. Carefully reached down to break the anchoring strand of the web,and the freakin' thing was as strong as 2lb test fishing line! If that car hadn't of lit him up,things would've gotten interesting.

AHA! I could have sworn that last year I killed one that had a yellow hourglass. Glad I'm not crazy. I almost kept her cuz I thought it was so weird.

About black widows: take a look at some texts on the subject and you'll discover that there are variants of widows that are actually not black, and the famous hourglass shape varies on some species. Also, some spiders deliver a "dry" bite, probably because they've used up their venom on a previous victim and have temporarily emptied their venom sacs. As for size, I read of one widow who ate so much that she literally bloated herself to death. Regardless, a widow bite requires an immediate visit to the emergency room.
I just wanted to find out about how to sharpen a knife. How did I get involved in all this?

Hmmmm ... What about a brown spider.? I grew up in Louisiana and was friends with a guy that was out of comission for nearly 2 months due to a brown spider bite ??? I know very little about them, but as the song says .. "I don't like spiders and snakes ..".

It was a smart marketing move to associate a knife company's name with an insect that at the same time can fascinate, scare, intrigue, harm, or kill. Sal ... If you're out there ... how long did it take to come up with the name...?? Is there a story?

Disorder,

You have a hot-blooded Italian woman waving spiders in your face??? Hmmmmmmm…. However do you sleep at night? <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> But thanks for the lead in and the opportunity to expound further on Harpy’s previous thread…..

With the exception of one family of spiders that lacks venom glands, <i>Ulobridae</i>, all spiders are venomous. Most however are harmless to humans. It is an understatement to say that the black widow spider, <i>Latrodectus mactans</i>, has such an unsavory reputation but it is the females that have justly earned their common name. The <i>Latrodectus</i> family as a whole is one of the more venomous groups of spiders and they have perpetuated myths that even slandered the good names of other spider families. Perhaps best known is the epidemic of spider bites near the town of Taranto in southern Italy. The species thought to be responsible was the original tarantula, <i>Lycosa tarantula</i>. The bite had all the systemic symptoms of <i>Latrodectus</i> and its victims, known as <i>tarantati</i>, would engage in a lively dance known as the tarantella that was supposed to flush the venom from the body.

The bites were more prevalent during the month of July and the phenomenon became a local social concern where sides became divided on whether victims were truly suffering or this was just an excuse for avoiding the hard field work and engaging in wanton behavior. A Neapolitan physician wrote in 1672 that the tarantati were malingerers, wanton young women (hoo-yah), or half-wits. He added that many people, especially young women, simulated being bitten and then danced and raved under the pretext (Hmmmm… sounds like Mrs Java today) The epidemic eventually spread to southern France, Spain, and the regions of Istria and Dalmatia in what is now Croatia. The hysteria began to decline in the late 18th century and the tarantella remains a popular dance in Italy today. Pockets of tarantism survive today in remote parts Spain, southern Italy and Sardinia.

Researchers eventually found that indeed a spider was part of the story but it turned out the real culprit was the Mediterranean black widow, <i>Latrodectus tredecimguttatus</i>, known in southern Europe as the malmignatte. The bite of the malmignatte has the same systemic effects as our friendly new world black widow.

Arachnophobia is seen throughout history. It appears to be a learned fear in civilized society and is usually clinically manifested in our adult years as we fail to outgrow childhood fears. Theories abound as to why we fear spiders but in countries such as England where there are no native venomous (to humans) species, it is rare and viewed as an irrational fear. Interestingly, it is sporadic in primitive cultures and some Amazonian peoples not only have no discernable fears, they hunt the larger tarantulas as a food source.

Aaaaa! Enough educational nonsense. Time for some java opinions:

Spiders are cool. They are feared and maligned way too much. Spiders have been dealt a cruel callous and crappy hand by the creator – plus, spider sense ain’t all it’s cracked up to be in the comics. How would you like to have eight eyes and piss-poor eyesight. These octopods can’t just cruise in to the local optometrist and ask for a set of new no-line photo-grays in the latest Bosch and Lomb or Tommy Hilfigger frame style. Even if you find something, how about the other spider classmates taunting you with, "Hey, sixteen-eyes!" Then you have to stumble blindly home to your hole in the ground (sure a burrow sounds soooo much more homey but it’s still a <b>HOLE IN THE GROUND!</b> all the time you’re straining to look over your cephalothorax – you can’t casually glance over your shoulders because your head is stuck to them – in fear that a wasp might sting you and use you as a living main course for its ravenous progeny. Or you’re nervously anticipating the shadow of Dynaryder’s Bates Military Lite jump boots to announce your life’s lucky lotto loser numbers have just come up and you’re about to be one with the Vibram. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Sure I know, many spiders like the South American bird spider have excellent eyesight but how would you like being hunted for food by the Piaroa Indians or being referred to as "as big as a dinner plate." <b>You’re nothing but today’s appetizer!</b>

Little Miss Muffett sat on her steenking tuffet to set the tone and thus the fear begineth! But hey – these eight-legged joes are only trying to scrape by like you and me. We’re all God’s creatures and our arachnid friends only want to put food on the web, raise their younguns to be good exterminator-fearing citizens, and have a few blue "beer" bottle flys with the boys down at the Trap Door while watching golden orb hotties do their silk pole dance. (Would ya check out the spinnerets on that yellow number up next, Bill? Man, I'd like to get my pedipalps on that one!) Can’t we all just get along!

****! Coffee low-level light is on again! Just when I was getting into the thread of the moment it all comes crashing down like a ton of empty number two Libbys Libbys Libbys fresh cut corn cans on a hot tin roof! Come on feel the noiz!

Ooops better go… Heard Sword and Shield might be on the prowl again and the Pumpkin Cutter Thread is still tempting me to dance along the edge. Whoa! A Concrete Blonde reference! A terrible mind is a thing to waste! Bye

Stay safe! Stay sharp! (and Stay spider-friendly!)

java ,your knowledge of tarantolati and stuff is amazing and really correct , i partecipated a tarantella reunion, and was really funny, and turned sensual..there was a lot of young people ,mostly young women, really a strange happening..and regarding my hotblood italian wife, normally i'm happy when she 's only waving spyders...happened to be the target of heavier projectiles as marble eggs, glasses, and a entire set of - fortunately closed- painting restoration razors followed by an iron she was using to glue old pictures...ehh. that's amore. if you survive it.

<b>Dynaryder,</b>
Should have known you’d pick up on the Concrete Blonde ditty with a Harley reference! I heard True was originally on the ST for <i>The Texas Chainsaw Massacre</i>. As for the boots - I’ll still hang with the Lites (or the Nikes whenever the BX has ‘em).

<b>M2K2,</b>
I’m no arachnologist, and I didn’t stay at Holiday Inn last night. I must confess I read about spider lore in Paul Hillyard’s <b>The Book of the Spider…… </b>

I haven’t seen the cane spiders but, I’ve seen the multi-hued spider on Okinawa that looks like the face of a samurai – these were probably well schooled in bushido so I never messed with those arachninjas. I was always fascinated with the tarantulas and other eight-legged critters that roamed around back home in Morgan Hill. <i>Tarantula</i>, a 1950s Sci-Fi horror movie with its fifty-foot radiation spawned mutant man (and woman)-eating, venom fanged beast was one of my first favorite movies. (Starred Leo G Carrol, from Topper and the Man from UNCLE and had a young Clint Eastwood as a bomber pilot) Here in Tejas, we have some big orbs, wolf spiders and little black fuzzy jumping spiders with iridescent green pedipalps that are as cool as an afternoon Shiner Bock. The MTB trail at Cedar Hill is well-traveled everyday but if I am the first to run or bike the trails in the morning, I’m breaking webs and spitting out enough threads to weave a scarf to go with the silk suit I end up wearing. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

<b>Disorder,</b>
Tarantella reunion? I like the part about the young women!!! And Miss-Disorder - That’s amore? Sounds quite painful and costly to me but at least you picked the only song I know that mentions the tarantella. Buy yourself a full set of Nerf house-wares and hang in there. Her aim will deteriorate with age so there is hope down the road. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

When that iron hit you face knocked you teeth out of place
That's amore?
Then the world starts to spin and you land on your chin
That's amore?
Your head rings - ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella"

(With apologies to Dino Paul Crocetti…….)

<b>S&S!!</b>
You should’ve drank some of that Blue Mountain yourself! Then you would have been awake when I passed through here. Thanks fo’-tha-joe and not to worry – there’ll be plenty more chances to bag-a-java before Halloween! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Aloha...I hate them things. here in hawaii, BIG brown ones called cane spiders, beautiful ornate biters called crab spiders, garden spiders just look freaky...BUT, they are better to SEE than the huge centipedes...the worst bite I saw was when my brother just bought a brand new Police SpyderSE, and tried to catch it as it slipped outta his hand while open...ow.

God will put you over...if you let Him!

Except for the harmful ones, I like spiders.
My favorite are jumping spiders, always waving their little pedipalps at you!
