Would anyone else like to see the Delica get a forward finger choir?

#1

Post by Donojhall »

Hello all. I’m new to the form, but not new to Spyderco. I got my first Delica 25 years ago and have a bit of an odd collection. Some pre-2000 and the rest post 2020. With that short intro out of the way, I just recently purchased my first Delica (k390) in 20 years. I also happened to just purchase a DF2 and a Stretch2 - both also in k390.

After having used all three quite extensively, I have come to notice and regret the lack of a forward finger choil on the Delica. The Stretch2 (a PM2 blade with more belly) feels like a slightly thicker Delica in my hand due to the forward finger choil and the DF2 is all kinds of fine cutting and control due to its forward finger choil. This then leads me to the Delica, without the choil that provides so much extra goodness on the other two.

I can’t be the only one who has noticed this and one day, I hope, to buy my third Delica (perhaps a Delica5) with that oh so nice forward finger choil.

It has been brought up numerous times. For me, I like the Delica as is, although I prefer the third generation more than the current fourth generation.

My sig line makes it clear what my stance is. :)

No, it would shorten the usable handle length when one is not using the choil. What could potentially be interesting would be choil a'la Kapara. But still - it would be a considerable change to the ergonomics of the handle - that would pretty much make it a different knife.

Yes, but does every Lil' knife need a Big companion? :D

Gotta say, I never really warmed up to the Delica. I know it is hugely popular but I prefer my N5's or even my Endela. To be fair, my only Delica is a Wharnie and it just isn't me. Different strokes.

IMO, the Delica does NOT need a finger choil, and is better off without one. There are similar-sized alternatives to choose from.

Hi Donojhall,

Welcome to our forum. Thanx for the interest and support.

As mentioned, this has been brought up many times and the conclusion is to keep the model as is. Some people like a finger choil and some don't.

Unnecessary, imo. If I really need to choke up on a Delica, I find it comfortable enough to just rest my index finger in the indentation formed where the the scales meet the ricasso. I think adding a choil to choiless knife alters the design enough to create an entirely new model. A "Delica with a choil" is not a Delica, as far as I'm concerned.. I say let the design remain as it has for decades.. no need to mess with a classic!

^this

And no, no, no, not even once! ;)

I personally like handle, guard-ish area and blade. The less space in between the better to/for me.

I'll add also that there is a Spyderco, Byrd line knife, that is essentially a Delica with a forward finger choil. So that's another option if you want to try one out. It's called the Meadowlark 2 I believe.

I'd rather see an extended edge and grip (Within the current overall dimensions) sort of like what was accomplished with the rock jumper. I wouldn't want a choil.

Yup. Absolutely. But that's not gonna happen. ;-)

Here are some options you could try:
- Byrd Meadowlark 2: basically a Delica with a choil, but made in China with 8cr.
- Native 5 LW: think Stretch handle, but cool rampless spear point blade and only 3".
- Sage 5 LW: Same as Native, but cool leaf-shaped blade plus a comp lock
- Para 3 LW: Same as above, only streamlined for EDC with a nice Military-style blade.

Search the forum for "Delica + Choil" to read some of the old discussions on the topic.

BTW, welcome to the forum. You've got a great selection of knives there!
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Welcome to the forum! :)

And: Please NO.

There are a lot of alternatives WITH finger choil already in the Delica size range... and for me especially IN that size range a finger choil is nothing I want. Why?

- On handles in Delica size the handle part of the choil makes the handle behind that choil too short for a good four finger grip (see Para 3)
- The Delica on the other hand has a generous actual handle plus a ricaso that is perfectly suited for choking up on it (for me doing this gives me better control than when choking up on most dedicated choils)
- Having no choil places the hand closer to the edge when the knife is held on the actual handle

Since you mentioned the Stretch: In that (larger) size a choil is fine, since there is still enough space left behind that choil

Your DFly on the other hand has a so short handle, that a choil is mandatory for a good four finger grip
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Try the Byrd Harrier 2. It is just a tiny bit bigger than a Delica, but not by much. I posted a comparison pic of it between a Delica and PM2 here: https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.ph ... 6#p1352576

Plus, the H2 is available with G10 handles (as well as FRN) which is something else that frequently gets requested for the Delica.

And maybe if the H2 sells enough, it will get a steel improvement to at least BD1N and maybe something better.
