REVIEW REQUEST: SPOT

#1

Post by bigbore@comcast.net »

Looking for a review (objective if possible on this forum) ; )

of the SPOT neck knife.

It's OK if it's not objective. I'm a fan too. ; )

I really tried searching but the search just gave me all posts not just the ones including "spot".

Thanks.

I can't give you a review,I haven't had one.I have handled it and it does not fit my hand.I have no dought that if I used it any at all it would hurt my hand.I do have large hands and it probably has a differant feel to someone with normal size hands.

I learn something new everyday, even though I don't want to. Jeff

I can't give you a formal review, but I'm happy to share my experiences.

I've had a Micarta SPOT PE for a few months. I carried it as a necker every day for more than a month. Then I rigged the sheath for belt carry and tried that in various positions. In either mode this is an outstanding knife!

The SPOT's grip is better than anything else I've tried. It is comfortable and unbelievably secure. (You may need to experiment with holding it at the first joint or along the finger bone, depending on your hand size.) I thought the La Griffe's grip design was great, but the SPOT has taken the finger-hole concept to a higher level. I can put my full strength behind the SPOT, which makes it formidable despite the short blade.

I wasn't sure about the Reverse-S blade at first. Experience has proven that it works very well in a variety of different applications. It offers most of the benefits of a recurve, lots of belly and the tendency to pull material into the blade when cutting. The point is not only good for fine work; it also lines up perfectly with my wrist for punch thrusts. The SPOT does very well as both a utility knife and for self defense.

The grip and blade shape combine to make the SPOT a natural extension of the hand. I think of it as a virtual index finger. It pierces where my finger would point and it cuts where the edge of my finger would touch. I experimented with cuts at a cardboard target with my eyes covered and it did just what I expected it to do, including precise depth control.

The SPOT is very short (4.8&quot and flat (1/8&quot. It disappears even under a thin t-shirt. When worn on the belt it is not conspicuous. The weight is also minimal (1.3 oz). You can carry that SPOT all the time without being reminded that it's there.

I think this may be the best design Spyderco has done in the last few years, which is saying a *lot*!

The only problem I've had with mine is that it stains rather quickly when carried as a necker. This is no fault of the steel; my sweat seems to corrode everything really fast. (It can eat through a stainless watch band in a couple of weeks.) My dream necker is a SPOT made of Talonite.

Played with a SPOT a week ago and first thought it was too small. After playing with it a few times I can't get it out of my head. It will be my next Spydie in a few months.

My SPOT is my concealed EDC. I wear it in urban settings as well as the back country. I've adjusted the length of the chain so that it rides between my pecs and it is both comfortable and unseen. Rarely do I take it off and rarely do people know I carry it... except my family and friends who have seen it. If it were to become necessary to use it for self protection; I prefer it to be a surprise to either the bad guy or the big old bear. I am confident that this little knife will serve me well if it is ever called upon to do so. The handle provides an unletting grip and fantastic leverage as a slashing or cutting extension of your hand. I find it to be the quietest most unassuming and yet fiercest knife I've ever owned.

Hi Bigbore. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

If you are in Denver, Spyderco has an outlet store in Applewood Village in Wheatridge. You can go check them out yourself as well.
